Overview of Alaska Genealogy Records

  • History: Alaska was first settled by non-natives in 1784 by Russia. Alaska became part of the United States in 1867. It became Alaska Territory in 1912 and it became a state in 1959.
  • Birth records: Births were recorded by the government starting in 1913, though not all were recorded until 1945. Birth records from 1913 to the present can be obtained from the Alaska Health Analytics and Vital Records Section .
  • Marriage records: Marriages were recorded beginning in 1890, with territorial registration beginning in 1913. Records were incomplete until 1930.  Marriage records from 1890 to the present can be obtained from the Alaska Health Analytics and Vital Records Section .
  • Death records: Death records were kept beginning in 1890 with territorial registration beginning in 1913. Records were incomplete until 1930.  Death records from 1890 to the present can be obtained from the Alaska Health Analytics and Vital Records Section .
  • Divorce records: Divorce records before 1950 can be obtained from the clerk of the superior court for individual counties. Divorce records from 1950 to the present can be obtained from the Alaska Health Analytics and Vital Records Section .
  • Census records: The first federal census for Alaska was taken in 1900. There are federal censuses publicly available for 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950. There was a partial territorial census taken in 1907.
  • Judicial district records: Land and court records are kept by the judicial districts.
  • Other records: Many cities and towns kept newspapers, churches kept records, and there are records of cemeteries, histories, schools, city directories, and other records that can be located by using the city pages on this site.
