Overview of Utah Genealogy Records

• History: Utah was first settled in 1847. It became Utah Territory in 1850 and included part of Nevada, Wyoming, and Colorado. Nevada and Colorado became their own territories in 1861 and Wyoming in 1868, which made Utah it's current size. Utah became a state in 1896.
• Birth records: A few Utah counties began recording births as early as 1890 with most counties keeping birth records starting in 1898. Statewide registration of births began in 1905 with complete records by 1917. Birth records from 1905 to the present can be obtained from the Utah Department of Health.
• Marriage records: Marriage records were kept by the government in Utah starting in 1887 with a few counties recording marriages earlier. Copies of marriage records can be obtained from the county clerk where the marriage occurred.
• Death records: A few Utah counties began recording deaths as early as 1890 with most counties keeping death records starting in 1898. Statewide registration of births began in 1905 with complete records by 1917. Death records from 1905 to the present can be obtained from the Utah Department of Health.
• Divorce records: Divorce records for 1895 and earlier are held by the Utah State Archives. Divorce records for 1896 and later are kept by the state district courts.
• Census records: The first federal census available for Utah is 1850. There are federal censuses publicly available for 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950. There was a territorial census taken in 1856.
• County records: Court, land, probate, naturalization, and tax records were kept by the individual counties.
• Other records: Many cities and towns kept newspapers, churches kept records, and there are records of cemeteries, histories, schools, city directories, and other records that can be located by using the city pages on this site.
