Overview of New York City Records

• New York City was first settled in 1608. It was consolidated as a city in 1898. It includes five county boroughs, which are Kings (Brooklyn), Bronx, Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), and New York (Manhattan).
• The New York City Health Department has copies of birth records starting in 1910 and death records starting in 1949. The New York City Municipal Archives has copies of birth records previous to 1910 and death records previous to 1949.
• The New York City records are generally kept by the county boroughs.
