On the very narrow neck of land between Orient Harbor and the Sound, just west of the village of Orient, is the old burying ground of Oyster Pond. It is approached through private grounds, and is hardly a stone's throw from the beach. Here were buried the first settlers in this part of the township. Most of the stones are of imported slate. All the inscriptions found in 1882 are here printed.

SOUTHOLD - Old Orient Genealogical Notes on Old Orient Epitaphs By Miss Lucy D. Akerly, of Newburgh, N. Y.
Vol 53, Oct 1899, p 413 - 415
Lieut. Gideon(4) YOUNGS, d. 1749. He was son of Gideon(3) (d. 1699) and Sarah, and was about 76 at his death in 1749. He used a lion sejant seal.
Gideon(3) YOUNGS, d. 1699. He was son of Capt. Joseph(2) and Margaret, nephew of Rev. John(2) YOUNGS, and through either father or mother, grandson of Rev. Christopher(1) YOUNGS, vicar of Reydon and Soughwold, co. Suffolk, England.
Ezekiel(6) YOUNGS, d. 1727. He was son of Gideon(6) (Lt. Gideon(4)), by his first wife Eunice PETTY.
Dorothy YOUNGS, d. 1753. She was daughter of Ensign Richard(3) BROWN [Lieut. Richard(2)], b. 8 Apr 1688, mar. 1708-9 to Jonathan(4).
DOROTHY YOUNGS, d. 1719, she was daughter of Jonathan(4), who was elder brother of Lieut. Gideon(4) YOUNGS
Dorothy BROWN, d. 1754, her mother, Dorothy, is supposed to have been a daughter of Joseph and Dorothy (TUTHILL) BROWN
Patiance TERRY, d. 1754, was a daughter of Jonathan(4) [Thomas(3), Thomas(2), Thomas(1)] by wife Lydia TUTHILL [Daniel(4), John(3), Henry(2), Henry(1)].
Thomas TERRY, d. 1753, brother of the last, d. 12 Nov 1753, in his 14th yr.
Esther YOUNGS, d. 1749. Richard(5) YOUNGS, her husband (and the father of Jeremiah(6), d. 1759) was son of Jonathan(4) and Dorothy (BROWN) YOUNGS. His first wife was Esther (WARREN?). His will dated 30 may 1765 (vide N. Y. co. Wills, Lib. 25, 1. 187), names wife Phebe, sons Richard, Warren, Daniel and Henry and daughters Esther and Susanna not yet eighteen.
Jeremiah(4) VAIL, d. 1749, was probably son of Jeremiah(3) and m. 6 Apr 1732, Elizageth YONGS (Joshua, Zerababel?, Col. John, Rev. John). Jeremiah(1) VAIL was at Salem 1639, and afterwards at Gardiner's Island, East Hampton and Soughold; his first wife, mother of Jeremiah(2) is unknown. He mar. (2) widow Mary PAYNE and (3) Joyce ----. Jeremiah(2) m. Ann, widow of Benjamin MOORE, and was father of Jeremiah(3)
Benjamin TUTHILL, d. 1748-9, was doubtless son of Jonathan(5) TUTHILL (d. 1741-2) [Henry(4), John(3), Henry(2), Henry(1)], who m. 23 Feb 1723, Susanna (d. 1743), Daughter of Benjamin and Patience (SYLVESTER) L'HOMMEDIEU, grand daughter of Capt. Nathaniel SYLVESTER of Shelter Island, and great grand daughter of Thomas BRINLEY, Esq., of Staffordshire, England, auditor to King Charles I.
Capt. William BOOTH, d. 1723, m. 1688, Hannah (d. 1742) KING [Samuel(2), William(1)], b. 26 Jan 1666; of their issue, William (d. 1712) was b. 25 May 1689, and George (d. 1713) was b. 28 Apr 1696.
Jonathan BROWN, d. 1710, was doubtless Jonathan, the second son of Lieut. Richard(2) BROWN. He m. Elizabeth, dau. of Capt. Nathaniel SYLVESTER of Shelter Island.
Samuel KING, d. 1721, was a son of William and Dorothy (HAYNE?) KING of Salem, m. 10 Oct 1660, Frances, dau. of William and Clemence LUDLAM of Matlock, England, and Southampton, N. Y., who d. 14 Jan 1692, aged about 53 yrs.
Hannah TUTHILL, d. 1714. Her identity is in dispute. Keith, in his Ancestry of Benjamin Harrison, surmises that her surname was CROUCH. Griffin says she was a dau. of Samuel BEEBE of Plum Island, but a deed of BEEBE's shows that his dau. Hannah m. David KING. The late Charles B. Moore stated that her name was BOOTH, and a careful study of the subject by the present writer would seem to render this position highly probable. If so, she was the daughter of Capt. William(2) and Hannah (KING) BOOTH, who was b. 22 Feb 1691. Hannah TUTHILL was the great grandmother of Anna SYMMES, the wife of President William Henry HARRISON.
Richard KING, d. 1735, was b. 5 Nov 1711, son of William(4) and Bathshua (BEEBE) KING.
Bezaleel KING, d. 1735, brother of the last, b. 31 Mar 1727
Bathshua KING, d. 1764, b. 16 May 1688, dau. of Samuel and Elizabeth (ROGERS) BEEBE of Plum Island. Her issue by William(4) KING, b. 14 Feb 1677-8 [William(3), Samuel(2), William(1)] were:-- William(5) (m. Elizabeth BEEBE), Richard, Hannah (mar. Richard BAXTER), James, Bathsheba, Susanna (mar. Robert SHEFFIELD), Bezaleel and Paul.
Paul KING, d. 1750, b. 2 May 1731, son of the above Bathshua.
Susanna SHEFFIELD, d. 1766, b. 29 May 1723, mar. 22 Jun 1749. Four children b. to Robert and Susannah SHEFFIELD are recorded in Lib. E. Southold Records, of whom Susannah (d. 1766) was b. 7 Dec 1750, and Robert (d. 1753) was b. 21 Jun 1752.
Hannah KING, d. 1728-9, b. 5 Apr 1695, dau. of Samuel and Elizabeth (ROGERS) BEEBE, m. 5 Sep 1715. Her husband David(4) KING [William(3), Samuel(2), William(1)], b. 22 Oct 1693, was drowned 26 Sep 1749, having mar. 1731 (2) Deborah, the dau. of William(3) [Samuel(2), Charles(1)] GLOVER.
Elizabeth BEEBEE, d. 1716, b. 15 Apr 1658, dau. of James ROGERS of Stratford, Milford and New London, Conn., for whom Mayflower ancestry, though often claimed, remains unproved. She mar. 9 Feb 1682, Samuel(5) BEEBE of Plum Island, popularly known as "King" BEEBE, who d. Jul 1742. He was son, not of Joseph, as asserted by Griffin, but of Samuel(4) of New London, who mar. (1) Agnes(2) KEENEY [William(1)], probably the mother of all his children, and (2) her sister Mary, b. 1640. Samuel(4) was the son of John(3) BEEBE, who d. 13 May 1650, on the passage to America, sometime of Broughton, Northamptonshire, son of John(2) (& Alice), son of Alexander(1) and Elizabeth, all of Great Addington, Northamptonshire.
Sarah PAINE, d. 1716, her husband John PAINE is not identified. Thomas PAYNE, the emigrant, d. in Salem about 1650, leaving widow Elizabeth (possibley a dau. of Henry TUTHILL of Tharston, co. Norfold, England) who came to Southold with several of their children.
Bezelel KING, d. 1725, b. 23 Jan 1703-4, son of William and Abigail (BROWN) KING
Abigall KING, d. 1716, dau. of Lieut. Richard and Hannah (KING) BROWN, and m. 17 Jan 1686-7, her first cousin William(3) [Samuel(2), William(1)] KING, who was b. 10 Jan 1661-2 and d. 12 May 1740, having m. (2) 20 Jan 1716, Susanna CROOK (d. 1741)
Martha GLOVER, d. 1713. Charles GLOVER, her husband, was probably son of Lieut. Samuel(2) [Charles(1)] GLOVER, and his wife Sarah(2) [Thomas(1)] MOORE as the dates hardly admit of his having been the son of Samuel(3) as stated in a modern note in the Southold Town Records. The emigrant, Charles(1) GLOVER, a shipwright, was at Salem, Mass., in 1632, and d. at Southold in Jan 1665. His first wife d. in Mar 1648, the mother of Mary(2), wife of John CORWIN, Elizabeth(2), wife of Geoffrey JONES, and Lieut. Samuel. His second wife was divorced, and he m. (3) Esther sAUNDERS, widow, probably dau. of John and Ann ROLFE of Southampton, L. I., and Newbury, Mass.
Mary BROWN, d. 1711, was doubtless first wife of Samuel(4) [Ensign Richard(3), Lieut. Richard(2), Richard(1) ?), who was b. 21 Mar 1686, and d. 30 Apr 1725. He doubtless was the same who m. (2) 14 Jan 1712-13, Rebecca, dau. of Samuel and Elizabeth (ROGERS) bEEBE, b. 25 Mar 1690
Samuel KING, d. 1725, b. 23 (1) 1675, son of Samuel(2) [William(1)]. He m. 1 Jan 1697, Hannah, erroneously supposed to have been a dau. of Jonathan HAVENS. The mutilated inscription on the next stone, with a great deal of confidence, be restored thus:-- [HERE LYES Ye] BODY [OF Mrs] HANNAH KING [W]IFE [OF Mr.] [SAMUEL] KING [JUN'r WHO DEP]ARTED THIS [LIFE] [AU]GUST Ye 17 [1712] IN Ye 39th YEAR OF HER AGE.
Mary WIGGINS, d. 1766, b. 27 Jan 1726, dau. of Ensign John(4) KING [Samuel(3), Samuel(2), William(1)] by his wife Mary (COREY). She m. (1) May 1746, Dr. Peter BROWN, (2) 6 Mar 1754, John WIGGINS; issue by both husbands.
Edward JOHNSON, d. 1717. One Mr. Edward JOHNSON of New London bought land in Orient in 1718. He was described in 1714 as a shipwright and was a married man at the time. Possibly the Edward buried here was a relative of Lot JOHNSON of Southold, of William JOHNSON who m. Elizabeth(3) TUTHILL [Henry(2), Henry(1)], or "of the wife of John TOOKER of Southold and Brookhaven, whose first wife was probably Mary JOHNSON of Hingham, England."
Absalom KING, d. 1752, b. 5 Oct 1733, son of Ensign John(4) and Mary (COREY) KING
Ensign John KING, d. 1753, b. 15 Jul 1699, son of Samuel(3) [Samuel(2), William(1)], and m. 25 Jun 1724. Mary COREY, probably dau. of Abraham(3) [Abraham(2), John(1)], b. 11 Jan 1707. Her surname has been sometimes erroneously given as BROWN.
Capt. John(3) KING, d. 1741-2, b. 26 Jan 1677 [Samuel(2), William(1)], m. 22 Aug 1704, Katharine, d. 1752, OSBORNE, b. 21 Aug 1684. His will (N. Y. co. Lib. 14, p. 269) names among other children, his daughers Mary BOOTH and Elizabeth HOPKINS. Of these, Mary(4), b. 22 Jul 1705, m. Oct 1726, her 1st cousin, Lieut. Constant(3) [Capt. William(2) by wife Hannah(3) (KING)] BOOTH, b. 8 Jan 1701; and Elizabeth(4) m. 26 Dec 1734, Abijah, son of William and Rebecca HOPKINS of Shelter Island, William being buried at Orient, as ar Capt. William and Hannah BOOTH.
Christopher BROWN, d. 1739, b. 29 Jun 1714, son of Capt. Richard(4) and Anna (YOUNGS) BROWN
Peter BROWN, d. 1747, b. 11 Sep 1719, brother of the last and grandson of Ensign Richard(3) and Dorothy (KING) BROWN, and great grandson of Lieut. Richard(2) and Hannah (KING) BROWN. Apparently Richard(2) was a son of Richard(1) who d. 16 Oct 1655, according to Moore's Indexes.
Anna BROWN, d. 1753, doubtless the dau. of Richard (5) BROWN (brother of Christopher and Peter above) and his wife Hannah (HAWK), b. 30 Apr 1745
John HOPKINS, d. 1727, son of William(3), b. 1660 [Giles(2), Stephen(1) of the Mayflower]
William HOPKINS d. 1718, Rebecca (HAVENS?) wife of William, d. 23 Apr 1746. His will mentions eight children, but six of whom are known by name, viz: William, Eferam, Hannah, Samuel, John and Abijah, who m. Elizabeth, dau. of Capt. John(3) KING, in 1734.
Eunice YOUNGS, d. 1725. A mutilated stone contains enough of an inscription to enable us with the help of town records to construct the following:-- Here lyes ye Body of Eunice YOUNGS ye Wife of Gideon YOUNGS Jun'r who died May ye 8 1715 in ye 24 year of her Age.
Gideon(5) YOUNGS [Lieut. Gideon(4), Gideon(3), Capt. Joseph(2), Rev. Christopher(1)] b. 7 Dec 1698, d. 25 Dec 1780, mar. (1) Eunice PETTY, (2) Rachel RACKETT, b. 12 Sep 1708, d. 23 Nov 1787
Michal TUTHILL, the fragment of whose stone remains, was dau. of Gideon(5) and Rachel (RACKETT) YOUNGS, b. 9 Sep 1734, d. 26 Feb 1756, O. S., m. 7 Aug 1755, N. S., Nathaniel(6) TUTHILL [Nathaniel(5), Daniel(4), John(3), Henry(2), Henry(1)
ORIENT VILLAGE
Vol 53, October 1899, p 415 - 416
The following inscriptions are from stones in a small burial-ground on the south side of the main road in the village of Orient. The slabs are of sandstone from the Connecticut quarries across the Sound, and only six bearing dates earlier than 1800 were standing in 1882. Asa KING and his wife Mary conveyed this land by deed, dated 26 Aug 1790, to Christopher BROWN, and others, for burial purposes.
