HISTORICAL SKETCH OF COCHECTON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

If any of you should go to Monticello, you will find in books containing records of Deeds for this County, the following:--

"At a meeting of a number of inhabitants of the Cochecton Settlement, at Bethel, County of Sullivan, and State of New York, convened at the school house in said Settlement, on the 9th day of March 1812, agreeable to notice given 15 days previous to the said meeting, and published two Sabbaths successively previous thereto, at said school-house, in order to form a religious society to assume a name that they say be known in law, as well as the world, and choose the proper officers thereto:

It was resolved,

1st, That Ebenezer WITTER and Bezaleel CALKIN preside at said election.

2nd, That this Society be known by the name of the Presbyterian Society of Cochecton according to the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church of the U. S. of America.

3rd, That Oliver H. CALKIN, Simeon BUSH, Moses CALKIN, Esq., Jno. CONKLIN, Esq., Elias CONKLIN, Ebenezer WITTER be Trustees of said Society."

This began the organization which on the 9th day of March next well be three score and ten years old.

August, that same year, Rev. Charles CUMMINS, D. D. of Florida, N.Y, preached here and admitted to membership, on examination the following persons:

Males: Simeon BUSH, Jno. CONKLIN, Elias CONKLIN, Ebenezer WITTER, - 4.

Females: Hannah BUSH, Molly SKINNER, Charlotte CONKLIN, Jane TYLER, Hannah JONES, Martha P. RICHARDS, Eleanor TAYLOR, Hannah WITTER, Huldah CONKLIN, Eleanor BUSH, Elizabeth BROWN, - 11. Total - 15.

The organization was prefected by the selection of Ruling Elders:

  • Jno. CONKLIN
Deacons:
  • Ebenezer WITTER
  • Simeon BUSH
Of these none remain.

Nine years after this, four persons professed their faith in Christ in joining this Church -- Moses CALKIN, Mrs. Elizabeth CALKIN, Mrs. Weighty IRVINE and Prudence IRVINE, the oldest member of the Church now living. She is now living her 50th year as a member of this Church.

From its organization up to the present time, 181 persons have become members of this Church. The number at present is about 60.

Eleven (11) persons have served in your Eldership, as follows:

At its organization, March, 1812, Elizabeth WITTER, who moved to Gibson, Pa., and died there; Simeon BUSH who died in 1836; Jno. CONKLIN who move out on the Susquahanna and died there.

March 16, 1822, the following were added to the Eldership, Rev. Charles CUMMINS, D. D., of Florida, presiding at their ordination:

James JACKSON who moved Old Town Chautauqua Co., N. Y. and died there; Hiram DIBBLE who moved to Honesdale, Pa., and died there a few years ago; Moses CALKIN who died among you 12 Feb 1865, age 80.

Dec. 23, 1838, the following persons chosen by the session were ordained Elders, Rev. Benjamin VAN KEUREN, presiding: Robert T. PARSONS, now at Huntley, Ill.; James McARTHUR now in or near Philadelphia; Abijah H. CALKIN, now serving as Minister of the Baptist Church, Waverly, Pa.

Apr. 26, 1862, the following persons were chosen Elders, Rev. Erastus SEYMOUR presiding: Ezra _. CALKINS, Silas C. BECKWITH, who died at Port Jervis, N. Y., 20 Jan 1865, leaving but one surviving and not removed to some other place.

Sept. 5, 1857, nineteen (19) members of this Church were dismissed to form the First Presbyterian Church of Damasous, Wayne Co., Pa. James McARTHUR, Sr., Hiram WILLIS, William McARTHUR, and Jno. ORR were chosen Elders. This organization now numbers about 12 members, and of the Eldership all have moved out of its bounds except Jno. ORR.

  • Rev. Samuel MURDOCK, stated supply, 1863-4. Now stated supply at Fulton, Del., according to the "minutes" of 1871
  • Since Dec. 1864, myself as stated supply.
The longest pastorate is that of Rev. Thomas MACK extending into its 6th year.

My own time --- reached nearly 7 full years, beginning the last of December 1864 and ending in September last.

On March 8, 1839, a meeting was called and Moses CALKIN, Jared IRVINE, Alexander A. IRVINE, James C. CURTIS, Charles YOUNG, Nathan SKINNER, Charles DRAKE, George BUSH, and Walter S. VAIL wee elected Trustees of a religious society to be known by the name and style of "The Presbytrian and Methodist Episcopal Society of the town of Cochecton".

The Church was built and dedicated, Thursday, 20 Feb 1840.

On 29 Apr 1866 - 16 years ago, a meeting was held and the name changed to "The First Presbyterian Church and Congregation of Cochecton."
