THE TRI-CITIES Glendale, Tropico and Casa Verdugo

These three names have always been linked together and represent to the general public one of the most ideal residential sections of Southern California, and while divided in name and each enjoying certain specific attractions of its own, yet in the main, they are so closely united that they form a single community, and the stranger within the gates fails often to distinguish the dividing lines.

Located in the valley at the foot of the Verdugo mountain, with the Hollywood hills on the south, this locality has one of the finest and most equitable climates of this far-famed section. To this is added fertile soil, pure mountain water, municipal-owned public utilities, unexcelled educa- tional and religious facilities, with every convenience enjoyed by the resi- dents of the cities, yet away from its noise and dust, above its fogs and smoke, yet withal but a short ride away from its teeming, throbbing busi- ness life; this ride, too, is the shortest and. most comfortable, and through the most scenic section of any enjoyed by the many beautiful suburban cities of Los Angeles.

In presenting this issue of the Tri-City Directory, we do so with a feeling of pride that we belong personally to the community, and our labors connected therewith have taken us into both the home and business life, where we have been received and accorded politeness and attention in secur- ing the mass of information presented herewith.

Our Advertisers-The issuing of a City Directory is only made possible by the patronage of the men whose announcements fill its advertising space. Directory advertising differs somewhat from all other kinds and in its way is especially valuable to both advertiser and reader. Those who make use of its pages for advertising purposes are the solid, established business life of the community, and we hereby extend thanks for their patronage. Our people are realizing more and more that it "pays to trade at home" and that our home merchants and business men can and do offer better inducements and are more deserving of patronage than those of the big city.

We ask you to especially notice the advertising in this directory and to govern yourselves accordingly. You are certain to be benefited thereby.

The Census Taken-In accordance with contracts made with the City Trustees, both of Tropico and Glendale, an enumeration was made while taking the names for this issue of the Directory, with the following result:

Glendale-Number of heads of families. 2,466

Total number of inhabitants 7,931

The government census, taken in June, 1910, showed a population of 2,746, which shows an increase of nearly 22212 % in the five years. A cor- responding increase in the next five years will give us a population of nearly 16,000, which is not as improbable as the present result would have looked in 1910.

The result of the Tropico enumeration is given under the proper head on page six and is much more complete, the trustees of that city having taken advantage of the opportunity to get a full and itemized report, while the Glendale trustees desired only a simple enumeration.

Again expressing our thanks to all who have assisted us in the work, both financially and otherwise, and asking your forbearance for the minor errors which unavoidably will occur in a work of this kind, we are,

Respectfully, THE VALLEY PUBLICITY BUREAU. F. WILKINSON, Manager.

REAL ESTATE MORTGAGES INSURANCE 336 Brand Boulevard, Glendale, California Established in 1909

Don't Overlook Tropico, Look It Over

The City of Tropico is the gateway to the far-famed San Fernando valley with its rich fruit and farming lands, and as such gateway it is the beautiful keynote of the whole locality. The city of Los Angeles joins it on the south and west and Glendale on the north.

Tropico was incorporated as a city of the sixth class in 1911, having at that time a population of about 1000 people. Since that time its growth has been marvelous along every line; beautiful homes, substantial business blocks and extensive municipal improvements are self evident proofs of the prosperity which greets us on every side.

The October (1914) Carnival-On October 1, 1914, a carnival was held to celebrate the many municipal improvements which had been completed in that year, viz: Three miles of completed streets, having a five-inch con- crete base and asphalt surfacing, with sidewalks, curbs and storm water drains; the completion of an ornamental lighting system, one and one- quarter miles long; the installation of one hundred and fifty fire hydrants; the completion of two school buildings, which are the units of two extensive groups of buildings to be completed later; the completion of a two-story City Hall, with accommodations for a public library; the completion of a fire engine house, and the installation of a $9200 Knox motor driven fire engine.

A City of Homes-Tropico is pre-eminently a city of homes, situated as it is within less than twenty minutes' ride in large comfortable suburban cars which pass through the most beautiful scenic section of the state to the business section of Los Angeles. It also has the advantage of a ten-cent straight fare, which is further reduced to eight and six cents by the use of "books."

Tropico's soil is rich and productive, as its shown by the luxuriant growth of the trees which line its streets and the beautiful flowers and shrubs which embower its homes, and the business man or woman can spend his mornings and evenings in his garden, knowing that he will be amply repaid for his labor.

Manufacturing-But Tropico is not only "a city of homes," a refuge from the dust and noise of the busy city at its door, but it is ideally located for manufacturing interests, being on the main line of the Southern Pacific railway and on the main pipe lines of the Los Angeles public utilities.

It already has two large manufacturing plants-the Independent Sewer Pipe Company's works lies just across the S. P. Ry. tracks and turns out vast quantities of tile and sewer pipe. It runs night and day and gives employment to over 125 workmen. The Los Angeles Basket Factory main- tains its main plant here, being the largest of its kind in the west and gives regular employment to over 100 people, many women and girls being thus able to aid in the support of the home. This company is now enlarging its plant, whereby its capacity and payroll will be almost doubled.

There is ample room for more factories here and the Chamber of Com- merce will gladly respond to inquiries along that line and assist prospective industries.

The Future-Tropico's future can hardly be overestimated. All that part of Los Angeles lying south and west of the S. P. Ry. tracks and on this side of the river is tributary to it. This locality is one of the most desirable residence sections of Los Angeles and within the next few years will be built up along the same lines which have made other outlying sections so popular, having distinct advantages over any other locality in the way of soil, climate, purer mountain water and accessibility to the business section of Los Angeles.
