PREFACE.
The present volume of the Directory shows 44,000 names for the O: land department, as against 41,630 for last year. This would indicate a p lation of 97,777. Deducting 14,834 for the territory included in this depar' not within the City limits, gives Oakland City a population of 82,94? 6 is not far from the exact figure. In the fall of 1900, the Census P Washington asked the publisher for an estimate of Oakland's popu as he had material for a close estimate, he made it up, and repr would not vary more than 200 from 75,000. The recent census Postoffice authorities justifies that estimate, and shows also growing more rapidly, probably, than any other city in the A comparison of the classified business directory with or four years ago will give an idea of the rapid strides O: commercial and manufacturing enterprise.
