Each year the canvass of the city for the information necessary to the publication of the new city directory becomes more complicated as the city has a greater number of inhabitants and covers a larger area. More and more it becomes necessary that during the time of publication our patrons and the general public should notify us of any change of address after the information has been given to us for the year, so that we may make the correction of address in the com- pilation, as after the canvass of a district is completed our only way of finding out changes of address is by recanvassing all vacant houses and offices for newly arrived tenants. Residents would help us to make the directory more complete and useful if they themselves would promptly notify us of any change of address (business or resi- dence) so we can give this information careful correction and re- vision. €

POPULATION
From information gathered in making the canvass for the 1915 Los Angeles City Directory and from statistics from the newly an- nexed territory, we estimate the population of the city of Los Angeles at this time to be 528,817.

AIncluding the newly annexed territory of Palms and parts of the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles now contains 284.81 square miles. There are 847 miles of improved streets, 288 miles of paved streets, 768 miles of sewers, not taking into account the territory newly an- nexed. Statistics show that nearly 100 miles of new sidewalks are laid each year, and in the six months preceding. June, 1915, there were 46 miles of storm sewer completed.

GOVERNMENT
The city's government is conducted by a mayor and nine council- men elected at large, all the important departments being under con- trol of commissions appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the council.
WEALTH
The sound financial basis of this community is strikingly shown by the character of our financial institutions, and the confidence re- posed in them by the public, as demonstrated by the large amount of

deposits carried by all of the banks in the city, aggregating at this time $171,257,628.00, and their clearings for the year ending June, 1915, amounted to $1,145,167,110.00. Nowhere in a city the size of Los Angeles can be found a greater number of magnificent banking rooms than are to be found here. The assessed valuation of property for 1914-1915 amount to $531,776,800.00.

This city contains 220 churches, besides a great number of chapels and missions, including almost every known denomination.
PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Our city has 199 scientifically constructed, modern, sanitary school buildings. 2650 school teachers are employed in the district, 92,000 pupils are enrolled, or over 5433 more children enrolled than in 1914, and 300 more teachers are employed. EETS

Centrally located in the upper floors of the Metropolitan Building, northwest corner Fifth and Broadway. There are 20 branches and 70 deposit stations throughout the city. The library now stands seventh among the public libraries of the country in the number of books circulated.

MANUFACTURING
Los Angeles, "where Nature helps Industry most," is extending through the Industrial Bureau of the Chamber of Commerce an in- vitation to the manufacturers of the nation to establish here branch plants for the handling of their Pacific Coast business. This organi- zation is giving the widest publicity to the many advantages and opportunities possessed by this city as a location for successful man- ufacturing. During the year 1914 over one hundred and forty new industries were located in Los Angeles and its metropolitan district and during the first four months of 1915 seventy-two new concerns have commenced business here. There are now something over twenty-three hundred manufacturing concerns located in the city, with an annual output of products well in excess of the $100,000,000 mark. Los Angeles has all seven of the requisites usually considered in determining the location and operation of industrial enterprises. They are are follows: Unexcelled climatic conditions, cheap power and fuel supply, varied resources of raw materials, extensive markets -local, national and foreign-unsurpassed water and rail facilities, abundant and efficient labor and splendid living conditions. The In- dustrial Bureau has well-equipped departments for the purpose of furnishing industrial information. Specific data covering any line of manufacturing is promptly furnished to interested parties. The Bureau publishes a monthly industrial bulletin devoted to the manu- facturing enterprises of the city and maintains complete files of in- formation, including a comprehensive directory of the manufacturers of Los Angeles and the commodities made by these concerns.

The Los Angeles Directory Company has for years furnished a great deal of publicity for the city by sending, as it does each year, a copy of the current Los Angeles City Directory to the directory li- braries in the principal cities throughout the United States, where it can be consulted free, thus showing to the innumerable number of people who consult its pages, our general prosperity, as demonstrated by the size of the directory and its general appearance, together with the record of individuals and firms that it contains.
We, ourselves, maintain a library file of directories from several hundred cities in the United States that can be consulted at our office when desired.
