Commencing at the bay on the west the streets running north and south are Atlantic, California, Arctic, India, Columbia, State, Union, Front, First, Second, Third, etc., to Forty-second.


North of Fir and west of Front the streets running north and south from Front are Albatross, Brant, Curlew, Dove, Eagle, Falcon, Gold- finch, Hawk, Ibis, Jackdaw, Kite, and Lark, to the bay.


Commencing at the bay on the south the streets running east and west are named after the letters of the alphabet. Beginning with N street at the waters' edge they are in alphabetical order north to A, thence north they are as follows: Ash, Beech, Cedar, Date, Elm, Fir, Grape, Hawthorn, Ivy, Juniper, Kalmia, Laurel, Maple, Nutmeg, Olive, Palm, Quince, Redwood, Spruce, Sasafras, Thorn, Upas, Vine, Willow, Chal- mers, Winder, Pierce, McKee, McNeill, Stone.


An ordinance was adopted in August, 1887, changing the names of certain streets in Mannassee & Schiller's addition, the addition of the Land & Town Co., and Choate's addition, as follows: The name of E street was changed to Everett avenue; F to Franklin avenue; G to Grant avenue; H to Harrison avenue; I to Inter-Ocean avenue; K to Kearney avenue; L to Logan avenue; M to Milton avenue; O to Oliver avenue; P to Pierce avenue, and R to Railroad avenue. The names of the num- bered streets trom Nineteenth to Twenty-eighth were changed to South Nineteenth, South Twentieth, etc. In Reed & Daley's and Choate's ad- ditions the following streets were changed: O to Webster avenue; P to Clay avenue; Q to Sargent avenue; R to Woolman avenue; S to Valle avenue; T to Martin avenue, and U to Greeley avenue. An ordinance was passed January 7th changing the name of Interocean avenue to Irving avenue. An ordinance was also passed in September, 1889, con- solidating I, Topeka and Oliver avenues under the name of Main street.


In most of that part of the city south of N street and east of Eight- eenth to Thirty-second the streets run northwest and southeast and southwest and northeast. Beginning at N street the avenues running northwest and southeast are Everett, Franklin, Grant, Harrison, Inter-

In that portion of the city east from Twenty-eighth to Thirty-second the avenues running east and west are Webster, Clay, Sargent, Woolman, Valle, Martin and Greeley.


HOUSE NUMBERS AND STEEET CROSSINGS.


Houses are numbered from west to east and from south to north. On the streets running from west to east there are 48 numbers to cach block, or one number for every eight and one-third feet. Commencing on the west end of D street the first number on D street is 200, which is at the northeast corner of Atlantic. The last number in that block would be 248, at the northwest corner of D and Atlantic, and at the northeast corner of D and California the first number is 300, etc. On the streets running from south to north there are 72 numbers to each block.


The numbers at the street crossings on the streets running east to west are at Atlantic 200, California 300, Arctic 400, India 500, Columbia 600, State 700, Union 800, Front 900, First 1000, Second 1100, Third 1200, Fourth 1300, Fifth 1400, Sixth 1500, Seventh 1600, Eighth 1700, Ninth 1800, Tenth 1900, Eleventh 2000, Twelfth 2100, Thirteenth 2200, Fourteenth 2300, Fifteenth 2400, Sixteenth 2500, Seventeenth 2600, Eighteenth 2700, Nineteenth 2800, Twentieth 2900, Twenty-first 3000. Twenty-second 3100, Twenty-third 3200, Twenty-fourth 3300, Twenty- fifth 3400, Tnenty-sixth 3500, Twenty-seventh 3600, Twenty-eighth 3700.
