HE Twenty-Seventh Annual Edition of Polk-Husted Directory Co.'s Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda City Directory is T presented with the assurance that it is equal in all respects to any of its predecessors and that the evolution from one issue to the other has proved of great value to Oakland. The experience of these years has been used to excellent advant- age. There is nothing of greater value to a city and its environs than a full, complete, accurate and reliable City Directory, because it enables the people to communicate and do business easily with each other and it enables those who come to the city to find merchants and others without difficulty.

The Directory is the greatest buyers' guide in the world. It is a cata- logue conveniently arranged to show the articles that are made and sold in Oakland and the names of the persons and their locations who make and sell them. No other work can so truthfully represent the people and their institutions as the City Directory.

The open pages of the Directory are like a visit to the market place; they present everything to view at a glance. All the people and their wares are there; buying and selling is made easy by the proper use of a City Directory.

The vast volume of information which the Directory supplies is an endless surprise to people who use the Directory constantly, for they al- ways find something new; they always learn something they have not known was in the Directory before, because everything is there.

Information regarding the City and County government is given, also full details of all asylums and hospitals, banks, churches with their pas- tors, clubs, colleges and schools, newspapers, in fact a world of informa- tion pertaining to the City and its institutions will be found clearly rep- resented in the City Directory.

POPULATION.

The Directory contains the original data upon which all statistics of the government census are based. It is obtained from the same sources, in the same manner, except that the Directory matter is obtained an- nually by an organization of experienced men, who make a business of doing this work all the year around and are therefore proficient in these matters.

The Directory estimate of population is generally regarded as very accurate and reliable; and population, it is well known, is the most im- portant statistics relating to any community. It is generally looked to with eagerness by all the people.

The Directory for Oakland contains 83,900 names, that for Berkeley 25,137, and Alameda 10,892. Estimating that each name in the Directory represents 21/2 persons, which is very conservative, the present popula- tion of Oakland is 209,750, that of Berkeley 62,842 and Alameda 27,230. Making a total population in the East Bay Cities of 299,822.

In submitting this volume to the daily inspection of a critical public, the publishers express their thanks for uniform courtesies extended to their representatives and for the generous patronage conferred upon the work.
