Introductory

T HE twenty-sixth edition of the Oakland City Di- rectory is herewith presented to our patrons. As in former editions, our canvass has not been con- fined to the city limits proper, but has covered all territory that naturally should be a part of the city. In the three cities combined, to make a complete canvass, it has been necessary to cover an area of seventy-seven square miles.

POPULATION.

The present issue of the Directory, after eliminating the firm names, churches, buildings, etc., contains 80,730 names for Oakland, 22,548 for Berkeley and 11,841 for Alameda. Using 21/2 for the multiplier to represent the women and chil- dren not included in the canvass, would indicate the present population of the East Bay Cities as follows: Oakland, 201,- 825; Berkeley, 56,370, and Alameda, 29,602, making a total population in the three cities of 287,797.

Copies of the Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda City Directory are placed annually in the Directory Libraries of the principal cities throughout the country for the free use of the people seeking information regarding our cities. The Directory which shows a large representation of banks, manufacturers, whole- sale, real estate and other interests in its advertising pages cannot fail to create a favorable impression with those seek- ing information regarding our cities and their business inter- ests.

To the business public for the patronage extended the present issue of the Directory we wish to extend our sincere thanks.
