WILLFUL INFRINGEMENT FOR PROFIT .- Any person who willfully and for profit shall infringe any copyright secured by this title, or who shall know- ingly and willfully aid or abet such in- fringement, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction there- of shall be punished by imprisonment for not exceeding one year or by a fine of not less than $100 nor more than $1,000, or both, in the discretion of the court.

Three Major Departments

The three major departments are arranged in the following order :--

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major department of the Directory, printed on yellow paper. In the first section of this department, grouped under appropriate headings, are included the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to make a complete presentation of their products or ser- vices. Following this is the Classified Business section, which embraces a list of the names and addresses of all business and professional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. The Buyers' Guide represents reference advertising at its best, and merits the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversi- fied community like San Francisco, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activi- ties of the commercial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major depart-

ment, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of San Francisco, and the name, official per- sonnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING ST- REET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on green paper, is the third major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical or- der; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are ar- ranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

Municipal Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a port, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free pub- lic reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of San Francisco.

SITUATION

San Francisco, "City by the Golden Gate," whose City Hall is situated at 37 degrees 47 minutes north latitude and 122 degrees 25 minutes west longitude, on a hilly peninsula with altitudes rang- ing from sea level to 933.6 feet U. S. Base, is bounded on three sides by water. Of a total of 93.1 square miles, only 46.38 are land. It is among the few world cities with the distinction of having more than half of its entire area washed daily by the ocean's tidal currents.

San Francisco has within its boundaries three islands-Yerba Buena, Treasure and Alcatraz-besides the Farallon Islands group some 32 miles west, which has been included in the City and County of San Francisco since 1872.

POPULATION

July 1, 1962, population estimate for San Francisco was 745,- 000, a small gain from 1960.

The 1960 U. S. Census gave San Francisco a population of 740, - 316, representing a loss from 1950 of about 4.5 per cent. Even though several cities in the Bay Area lost population in the decade, the losses were countered by sizable gains in the newer, outlying cities of the metropolitan area. Many of the older areas in the city have become less congested, and in most dwellings the total number of occupants has dwindled. Predominating nationalities of foreign- born residents: Italian, German, Irish, Canadian, Chinese, Japa- nese, Russian, Mexican.

AREA, ALTITUDE, CITY FINANCES

Area-45.45 square miles (land, 46.38 including islands). Altitude-Sea level to 933.6 feet city datum.

Assessed Valuation-$2,126,085,079, all property, including $83,867, 706 veteran and welfare exemptions. $8.48 tax rate (1960- 61) includes $0.017 levied by Rapid Transit District, but collected by City.

Bonded Debt-$223,661,200 (June 30, 1961).

CLIMATE

San Francisco's unique location at the northern end of a nar- row peninsula which separates San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean and forms the southern shore of the Golden Gate-the only Sea level entrance, through the Coastal Mountains into the Great Valley-causes this to be known as the air-conditioned city, with cool, pleasant summers and mild winters. Flowers bloom through- out the year, and warm clothing is needed in every month.

As a result of the steady sweep of air from the Pacific, there are few extremes of heat or cold. During the entire 88 years of temperature records in San Francisco, temperatures have risen to 90 degrees or higher on an average of but once a year and drop- ped below freezing less than once a year. As a rule, abnormally warm or cool periods last but a few days.

Pronounced wet and dry seasons are another characteristic of this climate. On the average, 84 per cent of the total annual pre- cipitation falls during the five-month period November to March, leaving but 16 per cent for the remaining seven months of the year. Long-time records of the Weather Bureau reveal that the sun shines in San Francisco during 65 of every 100 possible hours.
