Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the following order: -

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major depart- ment of the Directory, printed on yellow paper. In the first sec- tion of this department, grouped under appropriate headings, are included the advertisements and business cards of firms and in- dividuals desiring to make a complete presentation of their prod- ucts or services. Following this is the Classified Business section which embraces a list of the names and addresses of all busi- ness and professional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabet- ical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activi- ties of the city. The Buyers' Guide represents reference adver- tising at its best, and merits the attention of all buyers and sell- ers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a great commercial, industrial and shipping metropolis like San Fran- cisco, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial and pro- fessional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major de-

partment, printed on white paper. This is the only record in exis- tence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of San Francisco, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corpora- tion in the city.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on green paper, is the third major department. In this section the numbered streets are ar- ranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in al- phabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of owner occupied homes, the listing of telephone numbers, new house- holder symbols and Zip Code numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper.

Municipal Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a port, as a manu- facturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this in- formation, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily avail- able for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and re- liable advertisements of San Francisco.

SITUATION

San Francisco, "City by the Golden Gate," whose City Hall is situated at 37 degrees 47 minutes north latitude and 122 de- grees 25 minutes west longitude, on a hilly peninsula with alti- tudes ranging from sea level to 933.6 feet U. S. Base, is hounded on three sides by water. Of a total of 93.2 square miles, only 46.38 are land. It is among the few world cities with the distinc- tion of having more than half of its entire area washed daily by the ocean's tidal currents.

San Francisco has within its boundaries three islands- Yerba Buena, Treasure and Alcatraz-besides the Farallon Is- lands group some 32 miles west, which has been included in the City and County of San Francisco since 1872.

POPULATION

The 1970 U. S. Census gave San Francisco a population of 701,370, representing a loss from 1960 of about 4.8%, 685,600 (1972 Census). Even though several cities in the Bay Area lost population in the decade, the losses were countered by sizable gains in the newer, outlying cities of the metropolitan area. Many of the older areas in the city have become less congested, and in most dwellings the total number of occupants has dwindled. Pre- dominating nationalities of foreign-born residents: Italian, Ger- man, Irish, Canadian, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Mexican.

CLIMATE

San Francisco's unique location at the northern end of a narrow peninsula which separates San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean and forms the southern shore of the Golden Gate- the only sea level entrance through the coastal Mountains into the Great Valley-causes this to be known as the air-conditioned city, with a cool, pleasant summer and a mild winter, Flowers bloon throughout the year, and warm clothing is needed in every month,

As a result of the steady sweep of air from the Pacific, there are few extremes of heat or cold. Temperatures have risen to 90 degrees or higher on an average of but once a year and dropped below freezing less than once a year. As a rule abnormally warm or cool periods last but a few days.
