M. A. LESEM'S Kneipp Sanitarium FOR THE CURE OF ACUTE AND
CHRONIC DISEASES
2467 FIRST STREET SAN DIEGO, CAL.
This institution is strictly a Kneipp institution. All treatments are administered in exact accordance with the precepts of Kneipp himself. My marvelous success in curing the sick has been achieved through means of my long experience, coupled with the knowledge of how to properly administer the various treatments, and by strictly confining myself to the Kneipp method of treatment. Numberless sufferers have come to me afflicted with very critical diseases which had been pronounced incurable by other practitioners. But with my method of treatment I have obtained the most astonishing results, restoring them to health. I hold in my possession numerous testimonials substantiating the above statement ; testimonials freely tendered to me by the best people in the city and elsewhere. All sufferers desiring relief, who are not familiar with the Kneipp treat- ment as it is practiced by me, are requested to call, and I will furnish them convincing proofs that any and all diseases, whether acute or of long standing, will yield to my system of using the Kneipp method of treatment. I charge nothing for consultation. Pamphlets furnished upon request.

The Reed School FOR NERVOUS AND BACKWARD CHILDREN
AND FOR THE CORRECTION OF DEFECTIVE SPEECH.
The School makes a favorable Impression on both Physician and Parent,
Because :-
The "famlly physician" notes the skillful, careful use of the latest means of bringing about the greatest possible mental and phy- sical development of children who require far more individual care and discriminating guid- ance than can possibly begiven in the ordinary public or private school.
The "family physician" notes that the Reed School has secured the unreserved approval of all the leading specialists in the care of chil- dren in health and disease who are personally familiar with its facilities, its methods and - the results which it attains.
The "family physician" notes that this school is not for the exploitation of any "fad" in child training, but is open to the acceptance of the latest developments in its line of work which have received scientific approval.
Because :-
The parent notes the truly "homelike" atmos- phere which is present, as indicated by the entire absence of anything "institutional."
The parent notes the evident pleasure which the Reed School pupils take in their work.
The parent notes the many unmistakable to- kens of the exercise of the tenderest care in the proper development, mentally and physi- cally, of every pupil.
The parent notes the school's proud record, showing the arousing of dormant faculties, the correction of misdirected energies, and in not a few cases the fitting of children to attend regular schools who had formerly been re- jected by such schools, on the ground that It was impossible for such children to be taught.
REED SCHOOL
A leading feature of the work is the cure of stammering and other forms of defective speech. This work is by no means confined to the nervous and backward, as the Reed method for the cure of stammering is favorably known throughout the country and attracts pupils of all ages, including professional and business men. The premises utilized and the teachers employed are entirely separate from those connected with the school for nervous and backward children.

INTRODUCTORY
We present herewith our fourth volume of the San Diego Directory, and we feel the utmost confidence that it will be received by our patrons and the public in general with the same favor and approval that our previous publications received.
We desire to state that more than usual care and diligence has been taken in the compilation of this volume, and in the obtaining of the census figures an almost perfect system was employed, and we feel quite safe in saying that the result obtained is as nearly correct as human effort could make it.
The City Directory represents more faithfully than any other medium the growth, prosperity and progress of the city in which it is published, but of the growth and prosperity of San Diego and suburbs, its citizens need no other reminder than personal obser- vation. The evidence is apparent on every hand, and the press has from time to time given full reports showing the gains made in post- office business, bank clearances, school enrollments, etc.
We have endeavored to keep step with the growth and progress of the City, and we believe the present volume will be found to con- tain all the necessary features of a modern up-to-date work of this kind. By our system of exchange with other cities, the San Diego Directory will find a place in the Directory Libraries of all the prin- cipal cities of the United States and Canada and several European and Oriental cities.
A City Directory is becoming more and more acknowledged as one of every business man's necessities, if he desires to carry on his business economically and successfully.
POPULATION. A Census of the population of a city is some- thing necessarily enjoined upon directory publishers, and the figures given to the public must be veracious and arrived at only after the most careful preparation.
The census completed July Ist shows 30,428 residents and 3,802 transients, tourists and others who are not considered permanent residents.
We wish to extend our sincere thanks to our patrons for con- tinued support and to the general public for courteous treatment and assistance given our canvassers while collecting information neces- sary to the completion of the work.
THE PUBLISHERS.
