INTRODUCTORY
We herewith present the fifth volume of the San Diego Directory.
Again we have to congratulate our fellow citizens on a year of remarkable growth and prosperity. The great strides made by San Diego during the past year toward its place as one of the great cities of the country, are evidenced in many ways-the building record, the postoffice receipts, the number of new in- dustries and mercantile houses, all attest this growth. But noth- ing shows it more certainly than does this Directory. The size of this volume remains about the same as in 1906 as the center line advertisements have been done away with, the type is also one size smaller, giving the book a better typographical appearance.
We have used all our endeavors, backed by many years of experience to make this directory complete and as free from errors and omissions as is possible. A publication of this nature en- tirely free from mistakes and omissions never was and never will be, but we have conscientiously and persistently labored to reduce such to a minimum.
We beg to state that the delay in publication of this year's edition is due to the mistake of allowing time to elapse between the canvass and the printing, the increase in population and the many new business firms that have been started since the first canvass, necessitating almost an entirely new one to bring it up to date.
We have endeavored to keep step with the growth and progress of the City, and we believe the present volume will be found to contain all the necessary features of a modern up-to-date work of this kind. By our system of exchange with other cities, the San Diego Directory will find a place in the Directory Libraries of all the principal cities of the United States and Canada and several European and Oriental cities.
POPULATION.
The canvass, completed Sept. 1, shows 38,240 residents and 4,185 transients, tourists and others who are not considered permanent residents. At the completion of the canvass July 1, 1906, San Diego had a population of 30,428 residents, which makes an increase of 7,812 in fourteen months.
For the liberal patronage bestowed on this work and also for courtesies extended to our ennumerators and solicitors dur- ing its publication, our cordial acknowledgements are returned.
