INTRODUCTORY

In presenting this, the ninth volume of our publication of the San Diego City and County Directory it is with the assurance that the canvass for information has been most thorough and every means possible used to make it as accurate as can be done in a publication of this nature.

.We were delayed in commencing the canvass for names until the end of July so that consequently the time consumed in the pre- paration of this work has been less than in former years. Changes in business and removals occur so frequently in a rapidly growing city like San Diego that it matters little in what months of the year the work is carried to completion.

It is most gratifying to note the remarkable increase in the num- ber of names this volume contains over that of last year. - In San Diego proper including City Heights the gain has been one hundred and seven pages with exactly the same measure of type.

This increase and allowing for reference slips, firm names and corporations gives us 27,500 individual names and using the conserva- tive ratio of two as a multiple brings our estimate to a

Population of 55,000

and this will be found to be very close to the actual census of San Diego.

References have been made as heretofore from the different spelling of names with the same pronounciation which will be found of great assistance.

The street guide showing the numbers at intersections has been carefully revised with the assistance of the City Water Department this enables one to locate a house number with ease and will be ap- preciated by those consulting this volume.

Our Directory is exchanged with all the important cities through- out the United States, and thus affords a medium of advertising the city to the outside world.

We wish to acknowledge the liberal patronage of our business people to this work and to the public for their courteous treatment of our enumerators.
