ESTABLISHED 19 SUCCESSFUL YEARS
For the Cure of' Acute and Chronic Diseases Without Drugs
2455-2467 FIRST STREET, SAN DIEGO, CAL.
T HIS institution is strictly a Kneipp Sanitarium. All treatments are administered in exact accordance with the precepts of Kneipp him- self. Our marvelous success in curing the sick has been achieved through means of long experience, coupled with the knowledge of how to properly administer the various treatments, and by strictly confin- ing ourselves to the Kneipp method of treatment. Numberless suf- ferers have come to us afflicted with very critical diseases which had been pronounced incurable by others. But with our method of treat- ment, we have obtained the most astonishing results, restoring them to perfect health. We hold in our possession numerous testimonials sub- stantiating the above statement-testimonials freely tendered to us by the best people in the city and elsewhere.
All sufferers desiring relief, who are not familiar with the Kneipp treatment as is practiced by us are requested to call, and we will furnish them convincing proofs that any and all diseases, whether acute or of long standing, will yield to our system of using the Kneipp method of treatment. We charge nothing for consultation. Pamphlets furnished upon request.

INTRODUCTORY
It is a pleasure for the publishers of this directory to attest the splendid and wonderful growth of San Diego during the past year. Such growth as appears from the increase in the number of names in the work herewith presented, over the edition of the previous year, is unusual, and should be gratifying to the citizens of San Diego and those interested in its welfare.
Taking the total number of individual names that appear in the 1913 edition, deducting therefrom firm names and names that appear more than once, and multiplying the result by 214,-a very conservative multiple to allow for the women and children rep- resented by heads of families-there is indicated a population of
84,533
people living within the city limits at the time the enumer- ators made the canvass. This shows a remarkable increase. Here- tofore in estimating the population, it has been the practice to use the multiple 212, but an actual test has demonstrated that 214 is the proper one to use, and this multiple has therefore been adopted by the publishers.
This directory contains 1365 pages and shows an increase of 342 pages over the 1912 edition.
The alphabetical list of names begins at page 89 and ends at page 1066.
The street and avenue guide has been corrected to date and many new streets added. It occupies pages 50 to 88e.
The map of the city used in this year's directory has been cor- rected to date and includes a complete list of the streets and ave- nues, showing the location of each.
Removals, alterations and additions received too late for reg- ular insertion are found on pages 88g and 88h.
Pages 25 to 50 include a variety of information such as executive, county, city, state and federal officials, including the various boards and commissioners, consuls, chamber of commerce, church and religious organizations, missions, cemeteries, parks, halls and public buildings, fraternal organizations, trade and labor organizations, state societies, clubs, etc.
The classified business directory begins at page 1209 and covers 156 pages.
The general index, the index to advertising department and index to general information, will be found on pages 21 to 24 .
San Diego challenges any city in the United States to equal the ratio of her building permits which now yearly exceed $140.00 per capita.

CITY WATER
The city of San Diego has the finest water system of any city on the coast.
This supply of water is secured from water sheds in the heart cf the mountain range east of the city in a territory where the average rainfall is more than 40 inches per year. En-route to the consumer the water is first filtered and then aerated and the capacity at present is sufficient for a city of 300,000.
THE HARBOR OF THE SUN
This is not only a commercial harbor, but is probably the fin- est and safest yachting harbor in the world, being perfectly land locked, with rough waters unknown. The Bay has natural chan- nel waters, deeper and wider than those of Baltimore, Boston, or Philadelphia, and excelled by only four other American Harbors in these respects. When compared with any of the world's great ports, it can be proven conclusively that none possesses better op- portunities for facilitating business.
One Million Dollars has been voted by San Diego to construct the first unit of a modern pier system. This work is now under way. San Diego owns its water frontage. Forty 1000 feet con- crete piers will be constructed opposite the commercial district as the commerce demands. Six or seven million dollars will be ex- pended later on the reclaiming of more than 1300 acres of land.
San Diego Harbor has depth, width and every other facility necessary to accommodate all the fleets of the world, were they to come here, and there would be no pushing or rushing for safe anchorage.
SAN DIEGO AND ARIZONA RAILROAD
The San Diego and Arizona Railroad is now being built at a cost of ten million dollars. The highest possible standard is being used in its construction, and it has the lowest grade and
20
INTRODUCTORY-Continued
shortest route of any trans-California road. It will be a link of the trans-continental railroads. The canal route, versus the short 1ail route to the Gulf of Mexico, makes San Diego a great com- petitive point. The higher altitude and arid country to the north determined Yuma as the southwestern railroad gateway by reason of the series of irrigation systems and lower level.
PANAMA CANAL
There is no doubt that San Diego during the next ten years will make greater strides in industrial activity and in population than any city on the Pacific coast. It has not only the climate, but the beautiful setting which will make it one of the great residential ' cities of the country. And it has a harbor that has been devised for the care of the world's commerce.
Panama Canal will open up the trade with Argentine, Brazil, Peru, Chili and Ecuador and will bring to this Western coast all the products that may be made in Eastern cities. The greatest population of the entire world lies in front of the Pacific coast, rather than in front of the Atlantic, and people will realize, as time goes on, that the cities of the Western coast will be vastly greater and more important than any city of the present day on the Eastern coast.
EXPOSITION
This Exposition will open January 1, 1915. It will close De- cember 31, 1915. Nowhere else in the United States are found climatic conditions making such announcement possible.
The San Diego Exposition is being built NOW. Work on the grounds is far advanced ; all buildings will be erected in 1913; the year 1914 will be devoted to beautifying the grounds and sur- facing streets, plazas, etc.
The exposition site comprises 615 acres in the midst of a park of 1400 acres in the heart of the city, overlooking the city and ocean, with snow-capped mountains for a background.
The San Diego Exposition has been named the "Exposition of Opportunity". Its primary purpose is to bring to man a full and complete knowledge of his individual opportunity to find in the great states of the west, a home where climatic conditions are un- equalled ; where the land is calling to man to come and find pros- perity and comfort, and where is now the greatest assurance of profitable returns on invested capital. In another sense does the San Diego Exposition spell "Opportunity." It offers to these states, now so needful of settlement to develop their vast and varied resources, an unparalleled opportunity to present an im- mense number of prospective home makers with exhibits peculiar- ly inducive to immigration.
