INTRODUCTION
The present volume constitutes the 1925 edition of the San Diego City and County Directory. The work embodies a complete epitome of their civic, commercial, social and industrial interests and activities. It is a modern Directory in all its parts and includes all of the essential features which have been proven so satisfactory to our patrons in pre- vious issues; these have been retained and amplified, and improvements have been added as suggested by experience in order to add to the value and usefulness of the Directory, thus fully meeting the requirements of patrons; the approbation and continued patronage accorded the work are constant incentives to better service.
The publication has had the benefit and advantage of the complete organization of the publishers, and of the skill and experience of their corps of enumerators and compilers added to the courteous co-operation of citizens, in the production of the volume.
The several essential departments of the Directory are set forth in the order following: -
THE MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT, pages 13 to 24 includes a. variety of miscellaneousi information such as city government, state and county officials, cemeteries, churches, clubs, public halls and office buildings, hospitals, libraries, parks, postoffice, schools, secret societies, etc
THE STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE covers pages 39 to 74.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE occupies pages 75 to 198. This section of the Directory, printed on tinted paper, includes hundreds of advertise- ments of the leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of San Diego. They have been carefully grouped by departments and are indexed under classified headings and' otherwise in various parts of the Directory. A casual perusal of these advertisements will picture many interesting phases of the city's activities. They are not display advertisements, primarily, however, but rather are reference advertising at its best. In a bustling, manufacturing city like San Diego, the need for this kind of information readily at hand is very great, and the general appreciation of this need is evidenced by the liberal patronage the City Directory enjoys in many and varied lines of trade.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of citizens, business firms and corporations in San Diego, is included in pages 199 to 914. The County section, in which is included all cities and towns in the county except San Diego, are arranged alphabetically on pages 915 to 1102.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is embraced in pages 403 to 1245. This Department shows the various manufacturing, mer- cantile and professional occupations in the city compiled in alphabetical order by headings appropriate to the class of industry pursued. This feature constitutes an invaluable epitome of the business interests of the municipality.

SAN DIEGO
FACTS ABOUT SAN DIEGO Prepared by Publicity Bureau San Diego-California Club.
During 1924 San Diego passed its most notable milestone, and the re- markable record of progress achiev- ed in that year has carried over into 1925 with a vigor that presages even greater progress in the next few years.
San Diego has started on a definite program of industrial and commer- cial expansion, which accounts in part for the present solid foundation of business conditions. For months San Diego has been listed as the one "white spot" on the nation's business map.
The outstanding development in San Diego during 1925 is the rapid building up of the city's marine sec- tion, extending for eight miles along the shore line from Point Loma to La Jolla, and the keystone of which is
Mission Beach. This project, which has resulted in the creation of the newest San Diego pleasure resort and residential district. is ranked as one of the major develop- ments of the last two years in South- ern California. An amusement cen- ter, which it is declared eventually will be the finest in the country, adds materially to the already imposing array of recreational facilities af- forded residents and visitors alike.
Development of the marine section followed the recent extension of the San Diego Electric Railway Com- pany's lines to La Jolla. No other part of the metropolitan district has progressed so fast. Competent au- thorities are agreed that within five years this section will be compactly built up.
In common with many communi- ties in Southern California, San Diego has progressed remarkably along a number of lines. The handi- cap of other years-comparative iso- lation because of geographical loca- tion-has been eliminated and today San Diego ranks in relative import- ance with San Francisco, Los Ange- les and Seattie in the minds of people
in other parts of the country. This favorable condition is due to a num- ber of factors, chief of which are the impressive recognition given this city by the Federal Government in creating a great naval establishment on San Diego harbor; the additional transportation facilities afforded by the San Diego & Arizona Railway and its connections, the Southern Pacific and Rock Island lines; the additional number of steamship com- panies making San Diego a port of call; the national advertising and publicity campaigns conducted by the San Diego-California Club, and the aggressiveness of the Chamber of Commerce in embarking upon a defi- nite plan for the acqusition of more industries.
San Diego harbor, one of the three great natural harbors on the Pacific coast of the United States and pos- sessing practically unlimited com- mercial potentialities, is gradually being developed to meet the growing needs of the metropolitan district. Flanking the harbor are the exten- sive establishments of the United States government, the more impor- tant of these projects being the U. S. Marine Corps Base and the adjoining U. S. Naval Training Station; the Army and Navy Aviation Stations, and the destroyer base. In Balboa Park is the great naval hospital, which ultimately will be large enough to serve the entire needs of the Pacific Fleet.
The harbor also is ideal for yacht- ing and other aquatic sports, which each year gain a wider following. Recreational facilities extend to the seven splendid beaches, the most dis- tant being 24 miles; and to the mountains, where a score or more attractive inns and resorts may be reached in an hour or two over paved and well graded roads. The uplands of San Diego are gaining in popularity, and during the last year or two a number of mountain tracts, offering most charming cabin

INTRODUCTION
sites, have been placed on the mar- ket.
Keeping pace with the city, there has been a pronounced development of the so-called "back country." The good roads movement is being con- sistently carried forward, and thou- sands of acres of heretofore arid land are being brought under water through the completion of irrigation projects of far-reaching magnitude.
A network of superb highways spreads in all directions from San Diego. This city is the western ter- minus of several transcontinental automobile routes, which, converg- ing at El Paso, Texas, continue to the Pacific Coast over practically the same route. These highways enable motorists to come to San Diego over the most southern routes, open throughout the year, from all points in the middle west and east.
No city in the United States has a better quality of water than that which citizens of San Diego draw from their faucets. Its source is high in the mountains, the peaks of which catch the rains and snows of the win- ter season and divert them into great reservoirs, where they are uncon- taminated from sewage and refuse. There are four city-owned reservoirs, Morena, Barrett, Upper and Lower Otay, and three emergency sources of water supply.
San Diego is probably more for- supply, than any other Southern Cal- tunately situated, in respect to water ifornia city. Upwards of 35 billions of gallons of water were stored in the city reservoirs following the rains of the winter of 1924-25, and this supply, at the present and anti- cipated rate of consumption, is esti- mated to be sufficient for at least three years, even if the interim should be a "dry" period.
Climatic conditions are ideal. The normal annual temperature is 61 de- grees. The average annual percen- tage of sunshine is 68, which is a very high average, and surpasses most cities of the United States.
Fourth city in population in Cali- fornia.
Ten banks: capital $3,425,000; deposits $62,610,650.
City of the second class.
Nearest port of entry for trade with Orient and through Panama Canal.
Nearer by railroad to Chicago and the East than any other Pacific port.
One hundred and five miles of street railway.
Average but nine days each year without some degree of sunshine.
Balboa Park, third largest in the United States.
Operates under modified form of city manager plan, with council of five members.
Extremely low infant mortality rate.
San Diego Bay discovered by Juan Rodiquez Cabrillo in 1542
First mission erected in 1769.
San Diego County contains 4,200 square miles.
POPULATION
There are 59,998 names in the San Diego section of the Directory, indicating a population of 134,995, being an increase of 2,425 since our last issue. This result is arrived at by multiplying the mumber of names by 214 to allow for the women and children whose names do not appear in the Directory.
But the growth of the city or its advancement is not to be indicated by mere figures. The pages of this volume present evidence of general civic, social and commercial ad- vancement, new business blocks, new dwelling houses and new factories, which with the quality and caliber of the people, meaning a progress even more important to a munici- pality than mere number of inhabi- tants.
DIRECTORY LIBRARIES
Copies of the latest editions of Directories of other cities through- out the United States and Canada are on file in the Directory Libraries maintained at the Merchants Asso- ciation, 608 Electric Building, and at the Chamber of Commerce, Broad- way and 2d, where they are acces- sible to the general public for single free reference

as an educational center. The Direc- tory acts as a mirror, reflecting all that is noteworthy in the city in the above respects. In order to spread this information regarding the city broadcast over the country the pub- lishers place copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries which are maintained in all the larger cities of the country, where they are readily available for refer- ence use by the public. There' they · serve as perpetual advertisements of San Diego, for business men the
country over realize that the City Directory represents the community as it really is.
The publishers take this oppor- tunity of thanking the citizens for valuable assistance rendered in the way of furnishing information con- cerning themselves and their friends for this Directory, and also the pub- lic-spirited and progressive business and professional men for support given in the way of patronage.
