The Volcano of Kilauea.
T HE VOLCANO of Kilauea, the greatest active volcano in the world, is situated at an elevation of 4,000 feet on the southern slopes of Mauna Loa, on the island of Hawaii, about two hundred miles from Honolulu, the capital city. It is fourteen miles in a direct line from the sea, and thirty miles from Hilo on the north and Punaluu on the south, the two ports at which tourists land to visit the crater. Kilauea is not in the form of the standard geography volcano, a cone vomiting fire, smoke and lava, but is a great sink, three miles in diameter, in a plain, with nearly perpendicular walls, varying from three hundred to six hundred feet in height, which in places are broken by debris slopes. The bottom of the sink, or " floor of the crater," is a mass of gnarled, twisted, black lava, comparatively level, and gradually rising to a central point of main action. This
main action is usually in lakes of molten lava, varying from one hundred feet to half a mile in diameter. In these lakes the lava is continually boiling in a furious manner, throwing up jets and foun- tains of lava to a height of seventy-four feet, dashing against the banks in fiery waves and throwing up clouds of molten spray, making one of the grandest, most awe-inspiring sights on earth. Although these lakes are visited by thousands of visitors no accident has ever occurred.
There are two ways of getting to the volcano. One is by the Wilder Steamship Company's steamer Kinau, which leaves Honolulu every ten days, and, touching at Maui, runs around the northern coast of Hawaii to Hilo. Good hotel accommodations can be had at Hilo. There is a good carriage road through sugar-cane fields, magnificent tropical jungles and fern-tree forests for a distance of thirty miles through to the Volcano House. This beautiful carriage drive has been completed at government expense.
The other route is by the Inter-Island Steam Navigation
Company's steamer W. G. Hall, which leaves Honolulu every ten days, coasting along Maui and the southern coast of Hawaii to Punaluu. There is a fair hotel at Punaluu, owned by the Volcano House Company.
The Hawaiian Islands are only six days from San Francisco and eleven days from New York. The fine steamers of the Oceanic Steamship Company of San Francisco sail twice a month to and from Honolulu. The steamship Australia of this line sails to and from Honolulu only, making the round trip in twenty-four and twenty- five days ; the downward voyage being but six days. The through Australian line, comprising three steamers, the Alameda, Mariposa and Monowai, touches Honolulu both outward and homeward, and through passengers to the Colonies frequently avail themselves of the privilege of stop-over at the Islands.
Under a late arrangement with the Occidental & Oriental Steam- ship Company and the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, whose steamers touch in at Honolulu about every five weeks, through tickets to Yokohama and Hongkong or vice versa are made available via Honolulu, and passengers may proceed to Honolulu on the Oceanic Steamship Company's steamers. This exceedingly favorable arrangement with the Japan and China lines draws a large proportion of the throughi travel via the Islands.
The single fare to Honolulu is $75, or $125 for the round trip ; round trip to the Volcano from San Francisco and return, via Honolulu, including hotel accommodations and other necessary expenses, for a period of five weeks, $225. For five cents in postage stamps a copy of Picturesque Hawaii will be mailed to any address, as also titne-tables and other information pertaining to the "Island Paradise," by writing to J. D. Spreckels & Bros. Co., I14 Montgomery Street, San Francisco.
