The expressed objects of the Society are to collect and preserve information connected with the early settlement and subsequent conquest of the country, and to perpetuate the mem- ory of those whose sagacity, energy and enterprise induced them to settle in the wilderness and become the founders of a new State, and also the male descend- ants of members. All who were in Cali- fornia prior to the first day of January, 1850, are eligible to membership. Any who have rendered distinguished or im- portant services to the Society or State may be admitted as honorary members. Regular meetings of the Society take place on the first Monday of each month. Annual election of officers on the 7th of July, the anniversary of the conquest of California and of the raising of the American flag on its soil.
