The Free Library was first opened to the public on the evening of November 7, 1878, with about four thousand volumes on its shelves. It has steadily gained in popular favor, having now 9,369 members on the library roll. July 1, 1893, it was shown to possess 23,428 volumes.
The library is open from 9 A. M. until 8 P. M .; Saturdays, from 9 A. M. until 9 P. M .; Sundays and holidays from 1 P. M. until 6 P. M .; for ref- erence only on Sundays.
The central reading room, which is located in the same building, has on file all the principal newspapers published on the Pacific Coast, to- gether with the most prominent journals and magazines of the East, also standard English magazines and periodicals, open from 8 A. M. to 10 P. M .; Sundays, 9 A. M. to 10 P. M.
Provision has been made for filing and indexing for reference all pamphlets, leaflets and printed papers of local interest, and such programs of public occasions and other documents and contributions to current his- tory of the city of Oakland as may be of use in forming the basis of a local historical collection, and citizens having such papers, programs and documents, are requested to donate the same to the library.

OBSERVATORY.
The Chabot Observatory of Oakland (established 1883) is situated in the middle of Lafayette Square, which is bounded by 10th, 11th, Jefferson and Grove streets. Its exact geographical position is in latitude 37° 48' 5" north, longitude 122º 16' 34.4" west from Greenwich, or in time 8 hours, 9 minutes, 6 seconds west of Greenwich, 3 hours, 0 minutes, 54 seconds west from Washington. The Observatory Building, together with its splendid equipment, was the free gift of Anthony Chabot, Esq., to the Board of Education, in trust for the city of Oakland. Monday evenings are reserved for the schools, and Friday evenings for observatory work. Cards for admission on other evenings can be obtained on application to the director, J. B. McClymonds, City Hall.
