The Free Library was first opened to the public on the evening of November 7, 1878, with about four thousand volumes on its shelves. It has steadily gained in popular favor, having now 9,369 members on the library roll. July 1, 1895, it was shown to possess 28, 102 volumes.
Provision has been made for filing and indexing for reference all pam- phlets, leaflets and printed papers of local interest, and such pro- grammes of public occasions and other documents and contribu-
