UNITED ANCIENT ORDER OF DRUIDS
The order is perhaps the oldest. History speaks of it as an Order of Priests and learned men among the ancient Celts-the race of people who left the parent hive in Asia at a very early period and settled In western Europe. For many centuries preced- ing the Christian era and at the time of the invasion of the Romans, the Druids was the most prominent and powerful order; they presided over the religious celebra- tions and were the judges, legislators, phil- osophers, physicians and instructors of their people. The order first assumed its pres- ent charter in England in the year 1771, and was introduced into America in the year 1830. It is a moral, social and beneficial society. Its principles and teachings are de- rived from ancient Druidism are and founded on reason and sound morality; they do not conflict with any religious sys- tem and are perfectly compatible with the laws of any civilized country. In becoming Druids, members are still free men. It is a secret society simply for the protection against abuse of its beneficial provisions. The order is firmly established in all coun- tries inhabited by the Caucasian race, and is the only order that has an International Grand Lodge which meets in quintennial session. Its objects are: To unite men (irre- spective of nation, tongue or creed) for mutual protection, to cultivate social vir- tues, to encourage in business, to assist in obtaining employment, to foster among its members the spirit of fraternity and good fellowship, and by a well-regulated system of dues provide for the relief of sick and destitute members, the burial of the dead and the protection of widows and orphans.
