TRANSPORTATION -- The Metropolitan Oakland Area is the terminus for the Southern Pacific, Western Pacific, and Santa Fe (Richmond) railroads. Inland waterways and ocean freight service is provided by the Port of Oakland (see Port of Oakland). Air service is provided by leading carriers including American, TWA, United, Pacific, PSA, West Coast, Western and SFO helicopter at Metropolitan Oakland International Airport. Also headquarters for chartered lines including World Airways, Trans International Airlines and Saturn Air- ways. The jet terminal is located 12 minutes from downtown Oakland. Airport limousine service also provided to Berkeley, Jack London Square, and downtown San Francisco by Airportransit service. Bus service by A/C Transit to all points in Oakland and surrounding communities. City and area serviced by Greyhound, Conti- nental Trailways, Peerless Stages, and Gray Line tours.

INDUSTRIAL SITES-There are 3,900 acres in the city limits zoned for light and heavy industry; 150 acres are vacant and available in parcels ranging in size from 0.50 to 30 acres. In addition there are 1,000 acres in the Port of Oakland Industrial Park with about 130 acres available and ready for use. Also Acorn Redevelop- ment Project 32 acres. Typical sales prices range from $35,000 to $80,000 per acre. The terrain is flat. Drainage is good for most of the area. Subsoil is medium textured and alluvial and piling is required in iso- lated cases.

RETAIL TRADE AREAS-Consist of a network of downtown districts and outlying shopping centers. Retail sales are $700 million for the City of Oakland and total two billion dollars for Alameda County.

CIVIC DEVELOPMENT-The Kaiser Center, an Oakland landmark located on the west side of Lake Mer- ritt, is the headquarters for the organization's 96-nation-wide and foreign plants. One of the largest office buildings west of Chicago, represents $47,000,000 investment. A Kaiser annex similar in size and design is now under construction on adjoining property. Recent public buildings include 42 million dollar State office building; 11 million dollar Hall of Justice; a 42 million dollar County Administration building; 22 million dollar County parking garage and rooftop heliport; 5-story Alameda County Health Building and $2,100,000 Welfare Building, and a multi-million dollar probation building.

PARKS AND RECREATION -- Lake Merritt, 160-acre body of salt water (only tidal salt water lake in heart of an American city), located in the center of Oakland, surrounded by Lakeside Park, a recreational center in- cluding CHILDREN'S FAIRYLAND, a Natural Science Center, Federal duck refuge, picnic area, Japanese, Be- gonia, Dahlia and Chrysanthemum Gardens, bandstand for summer concerts. Two State Parks situated in the region, Knowland State Arboretum and Park, home of the Oakland Zoo, 98th Avenue and MacArthur Freeway and Alameda State Beach Park in nearby city of Alameda. Jack London Square, and Marina, recreational and restaurant area; beautiful year-round Morcom Amphitheater of Roses.
