INTRODUCTION
Few cities in the world offer finer or more diversified edu- cational opportunities.
Enrollment in institutions of higher education in northern California is above the national average in re- lation to the population.
Higher education facilities include the public univer- sities system, state colleges, public junior colleges, private four-year colleges and private junior colleges.
Extensive research activities are carried out by the larger universities of California and Stanford and numer- ous other northern California organizations with research facilities.
SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES
In San Francisco under the jurisdiction of the De- partment of Education of San Francisco there are 124 schools with a total average daily attendance of 93,079 in 1959. In addition, there are 101 adult education centers and 25 child care centers.
An additional 29,535 were enrolled in parochial
schools in the fall semester, 1959, and several thousand others attend private and technical schools in the city. Courses of training in practically all phases of business, art, dramatics, and the various trades are offered in the public and private schools.
A list of institutions of higher learning, with the en- rollment of each, will be found under "Statistical Review" on a preceding page.
VETERANS' TRAINING
Approved to offer training to war veterans under Public Law 346 as amended and Public Law 550, there are about 80 educational institutions in San Francisco, 243 in the Bay Region and 307 in northern California. In this group are public and private institutions including uni- versities, colleges, junior colleges, high schools, medical schools and nursing schools. The private vocational schools and professional and semi-professional schools cover thirty fields of learning.

SAN FRANCISCO Headquarters City of the West
Attesting to San Francisco's growth as the nation's western capital, more than $300 million has been authorized or announced in the city's central business district since 1955 for con- struction or modernization. With 30 large corporations having national headquarters in San Francisco with combined assets of $34 billion, an in- crease of $12 billion since 1950, the continuous development of the city as a managerial center is assured.
UND HAND
It's a Pleasure to Live, Work and Do Business in San Francisco
San Francisco's location on one of the world's most beautiful bays creates an ideal year-round "air-conditioned" climate unequalled by any other large city in the world - the daily mean maximum temperature is 62.6 degrees, the daily mean minimum 50.4 degrees. A mecca for visitors, who last year exceeded one and a half million, the area is unique in recrea- tional facilities.
Business Activity
has shown consistent year to year gains in the last decade, from 1947-49 average index of 100, to a 1959 average of 167.7. This was an increase of 6.6% over 1958. In the first half of 1960, the 172.3 index represents a 7.8% gain from the corresponding 1959 period. Employment in the city now stands at about 470,000, a gain of about 7.6% since 1950.
Population
of the city and county of San Francisco is estimated at about 730,000, on the basis of the preliminary 1960 census figure of 715,609. (1950 final figure was about 15,000 higher than the preliminary). While this is about a 6% decrease since 1950, the 9 county SF Bay Area has grown 34% between 1950 and the 1960 preliminary total of 3,592,327. This represents an average net increase of 7590 per month in the 10 year period for the Bay Area.
Income . . .
remaining after taxes (effective buying income), reached higher and higher. According to Sales Management's 1960 Survey of Buying Power, 1959 per capita income for San Franciscans stood at $2862 - highest of any county or major city in the country. This was a 21.8% increase over the $2350 shown for 1950.
Per household income for San Francisco in 1959 was estimated at $8056, second among major US cities. The SF-Oakland metropolitan area topped all metro areas with a per capita income of $2528, and ranked 6th in per household income ($7732).
Industrial growth .
in the 13 county SF Bay Region has totaled over $2.23 billion in new plants and expansions since 1950, of which about $135 million was within San Francisco. Manufacturing employment in 1959 was about 262,200 in the 9 counties, one fourth of which was in SF. Unemployment averaged only 4.1% of the labor force in 1959.
Construction . . .
reached new highs in 1959, with $109 million of permits authorized and several times that figure in new projects announced. This marked the first year the city had authorized over $100 million in permits.
Retail trade
accounted for $1.7 billion worth of business in the city, and $5.5 billion for the Bay Area in 1959, as measured by taxable transactions. For the city itself, this represents a 36.3% gain over 10 years, and an even greater gain for the surrounding area. Department store sales in SF are 34% above the 1947-49 average, and were 6.3% higher in 1959 than in 1958.
Seven major market week showings held semi-annually attracts tens of thousands of buyers as does the annual World Trade Fair. The Western Merchandise Mart, largest complete home goods wholesale market center on the Pacific Coast with over 3,100 lines of merchandise represented, draws more than 100,000 buyer-registrations annually. San Francisco sells almost twice the amount of goods at wholesale per capita than any other major city in California-and more than any other large city in the West. 1,600 branch offices of national and regional firms make it one of the largest branch office centers in the West
World trade . .
through the San Francisco Customs District exceeded $1 billion in 1959, the highest total since the reporting service began in 1951, and 49.6% above that year. This district accounts for 32.2% of all imports into the 5 Pacific Coast states (including Hawaii and Alaska) and 29.6% of all exports. Total volume of foreign, coastwise, intercoastal and inland shipping in 1959 through the Port of San Francisco was 5.1 million revenue tons.
San Francisco has a $120 million investment in its magnificent water- front facilities, and the Port Authority has expended $25 million in the past decade on modernization. An additional $50 million program is under way. More than 250 air and marine lines maintain offices or agencies in the city.
San Francisco International Airport . .
located 15 minutes away from downtown, in San Mateo County, represents an investment of over $80 million in facilities. Continuous expansion is under way to meet the needs of ever increasing passenger and air cargo activity.

MR. CITIZEN!
CORRECT INFORMATION IS VALUABLE TO YOU!
Cooperate with the City Directory enumerators to see that your name and those of your family are correctly listed in each edition. Your name, listed correctly in the City Directory, is a great asset. This has been proved thousands of times, especially in cases of employment application, proof of residence, questions relating to citizenship, applications for welfare assistance, distribution of mail, etc. Be better established . . . be on record as a local citizen by seeing that your name is not missed or incorrectly listed in the Directory.
