AN INTERESTING ACCOUNT OF THIS EVENT, WITH THE ADDRESSES BY MR. WETMORE; DOCTOR THOMAS FELL, PRESIDENT OF ST. JOHN'S COLLEGE; THE FRENCH AMBASSADOR AND PRESIDENT TART, IS GIVEN IN THE LAST PUBLICATION BY THE GENERAL SOCIETY.
THE ELECTION OF MR. JAMES MORTIMER MONTGOMERY AS GEN- ERAL VICE-PRESIDENT HAS GIVEN US MOST INTENSE PLEASURE AND SATISFACTION, NOT BECAUSE HE IS A MEMBER OF THE CALI- FORNIA SOCIETY, BUT BY REASON OF THE MANY SACRIFICES HE HAS MODE FOR THE WELFARE OF OUR ORDER DURING THE TWENTY-ONE YEARS OF HIS INCUMBENCY AS GENERAL SECRETARY, AND PAR. . TICULARLY FOR THE GREAT ASSISTANCE WE HAD FROM HIM AT TIMES WHEN HIS HELP WAS MATERIAL FOR OUR ESTABLISHMENT.
IN THE YEAR 1909, DEPARTED THIS LIFE REV. EDWARD EVERETT HALE, GENERAL CHAPLAIN AND CHAPLAIN OF THE UNITED STATES SENATE. HIS LIFE IS A PART OF THE LITERARY AND RELIGIOUS HISTORY OF THIS COUNTRY AND ANY COMMENT UPON HIM IN THIS PLACE WOULD BE A WORK OF SUPEREROGATION.
JOHN AUSTIN STEVENS, THE FOUNDER OF OUR ORDER, DIED ON JUNE 16, 1910, AT HIS HOME IN NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND. ON JUNE 21, UNDER THE MANAGEMENT OF THE NEW YORK SOCIETY, SONS OF THE REVOLUTION, FINAL HONORS WERE PAID TO HIM BY A SOLEMN AND .IMPRESSIVE SERVICE IN ST. PAUL'S CHAPEL, NEW YORK CITY, LARGELY ATTENDED BY DELEGATIONS FROM THE CHAMBER OF COM- MERCE, THE NEW YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY, AND MANY CORPORA- TIONS WITH WHICH MR. STEVENS HAD LONG BEEN CONNECTED. THE FUNERAL PROCESSION WAS ESCORTED BY THE VETERAN CORPS OF ARTILLERY OF THE WAR OF 1812, AND HIS REMAINS WERE IN- TERRED IN THE FAMILY VAULT AT GREENWOOD CEMETERY.
THE DEATH OF JOHN LEE CARROLL, PRESIDENT OF THE GEN- ERAL SOCIETY SINCE ITS ORGANIZATION IN 1890, OCCURRED ON FEBRUARY 27, 1911, AT HIS HOME IN WASHINGTON, AND, AT THE LAST TRIENNIAL MEETING, MR. EDMUND WETMORE, PRESIDENT OF THE NEW YORK SOCIETY AND GENERAL VICE-PRESIDENT, WAS UN- ANIMOUSLY ELECTED GENERAL PRESIDENT.
WE MAY SAY OF GOVERNOR CARROLL WHAT HE SO FEELINGLY EXPRESSED REGARDING THE DEATH OF FREDERICK SAMUEL TALL- MADGE AND THE SUCCESSION OF MR. WETMORE TO HIS HONORS, "WE LOVED HIM, FOR HE WAS THE MOST LOVABLE MAN AND THE MOST LOVABLE PRESIDENT OF ANYBODY THAT EVER LIVED; AT THE SAME TIME, WE KNOW WELL THE MOTTO IN ENGLAND IS, 'THE KING IS DEAD; LONG LIVE THE KING.'"
.
ONLY THOSE OF THE OLDER MEMBERS OF OUR ORDER, WHO UN. DERSTAND THE PRINCIPLES WHICH ARE THE VERY FOUNDATION STONES OF THE MONUMENT WE HAVE ERECTED, MORE DURABLE THAN BRASS, AND LOFTIER THAN THE ROYAL HEIGHT OF THE PYRAMIDS; WHO HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE BATTLES WE HAVE FOUGHT AND WON TO PRESERVE THE INTEGRITY OF OUR SOCIETY, AND WHO HAVE MAINTAINED AN INFLEXIBLE LOYALTY TO OUR UNION, CAN APPRECIATE THAT LEADERSHIP OF GOVERNOR CARROLL WIEICH OVERCOME, NOT ONLY OVERT ATTACKS FROM WITHOUT, BUT

INSIDIOUS ATTEMPTS WITHIN OUR RANKS TO DISMEMBER OUR OR- GANIZATION.
FOR US HE FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT WHICH LASTED THROUGH YEARS OF TRIBULATION, BUT WITH NO PEAR IN HIS COURAGEOUS HEART THAT THE RIGHT WOULD GO DOWN IN DEREAT, AND OUR TRIUMPHANT VICTORY IN IS9S, UNDER HIS GENERALSHIP, SETTLED ALL CONTROVERSIES IN OUR MIDST, AND GAVE US AN IMPREGNABLE FORTIFICATION AGAINST ANY FUTURE ATTACK AGAINST US.
DEPOSITED IN OUR LIBRARY IS A COLLECTION-PERHAPS UNIQUE OF ITS KIND-OF ALL THE DOCUMENTS PUBLISHED BY OUR GENERAL SOCIETY AND MANY BY THE STATE SOCIETIES. IN THESE BOOKS MAY BE READ A COMPLETE HISTORY OF THE WAR MADE AGAINST US; THE CONTROVERSIES INTO WHICH WE WERE FORCED AND THE MEASURES WE ADOPTED FOR OUR DEFENSE WHICH SECURED FOR US THAT CONDITION OF INDEPENDENCE AND PEACE WHICH OUR GENERAL SOCIETY NOW ENJOYS.
WITHOUT A PERUSAL OF THESE DOCUMENTS IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO OBTAIN A KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRIALS THROUGH WHICH HAVE PASSED OUR GENERAL AND STATE SOCIETIES ALMOST FROM THE DATE OF THEIR INCEPTION, AND IT HAS BEEN NOTED THAT, IN MEETINGS OF OUR SOCIETY, AS WELL AS IN THOSE OF OTHER STATES, MEMBERS WHO HAVE BEEN ADMITTED IN LATER YEARS AND WHO HAVE NEGLECTED TO READ, EVEN OUR BY-LAWS, OR TO INFORM THEMSELVES OF THE HISTORY OF OUR ORDER, HAVE ADVANCED PROPOSITIONS AND ARGUMENTS IN SUPPORT OF MEASURES WHICH, IF ADOPTED, WOULD BE SUBVERSIVE OF THE PRINCIPLES FOR WHICH WE HAVE CONTENDED SO MANY YEARS.
IF A TIME SHALL COME, DISTURBING THE PRESENT PREVAILING HARMONY AND OUR SETTLED CODE OF ACTION, THE CAUSES UN DOUBTEDLY WILL BE THE SAME AS THOSE GIVEN BY CICERO FOR THE LOSS OF THE GREAT REPUBLIC, VIZ:
Proveniebant oratores novi, stulti, adolescentuli.
FROM THE DATE OF THE RECEPTION OF CALIFORNIA AS AN AU TONIMOUS FACTOR IN THE AFFAIRS OF THE GENERAL SOCIETY, WE HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED WITH THOSE STATES WHICH RIGIDLY AD. HERED TO OUR ORGANIC LAWS AND VEHEMENTLY BATTLED AGAINST EVERY ATTEMPT AT INNOVATION. THE OLDEST SOCIETY UPON THE PACIFIC SLOPE, AND RECOGNIZED THROUGHOUT THE GREAT COM MONWEALTH OF CALIFORNIA AS A LEADER IN ALL PATRIOTIC WORK; WITH A MEMBERSHIP LARGER THAN ANY OTHER ORGANIZATION OF OUR ORDER, WEST OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS, OUR VOICE HAS BEEN HEARD WITH RESPECT AND OUR RECOMMENDATIONS HAVE HAD MATERIAL INFLUENCE IN THE MEASURES ADOPTED BY THE GEN. ERAL SOCIETY.
A FUTURE NEGLECT TO CARRY OUT THE PRINCIPLES WHICH HAVE CONTROLLED OUR ACTIONS DURING THE LAST TWENTY YEARS. OR A YIELDING TO SUCH INFLUENCES. AGAINST WHICH CICERO UT. TERED THIS WARNING-WHICH INFLUENCES
Of younger spirits, whose apprehensive senses All but new things disdain; whose judgments are Mere fathers of their garments; whose constancios Expire before their fashions.
11
HAVE, PERHAPS, DURING THE LAST THREE OR FOUR YEARS, MADE THEMSELVES FELT IN OUR OWN STATE SOCIETY AFFAIRS-WILL PLACE A WEAPON IN THE HANDS OF THOSE WHO ARE CONSTANTLY ON THE WATCH FOR A VULNERABLE PLACE IN OUR ARMOR, AND READY TO STRIKE A MORTAL BLOW AT THE LIFE OF OUR ORDER.
