EL CAJON "The Valley of Opportunity"
El Cajon Valley (Spanish, meaning "The Box") is a fertile valley of some 48,000 acres, situated 16 miles east of San Diego, and boxed in by the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains. The level acreage of the floor of the valley is devoted to raisin grapes, deciduous fruits, truck garden- ing, dairying, and hay and grain; while on the frost-free foothills, are to be found the orange, lemon, and grape fruit orchards. There are parts of the valley where tomatoes grow the year around.
Some men will misdirect their energy and make a failure anywhere; but we claim that, for the man who has had some experience in farming and is willing to get in and do some real work, El Cajon Valley is indeed "The Valley of Opportunity". A rare combination of soil, water, and cli- mate allow of more diversified lines of endeavor than any other part of Southern California.
There is hardly a crop grown in the valley that does not anticipate all other parts of the state and receives the high prices of the early mar- kets. This, with the low rates of water transportation, makes a combina- tion that is hard to beat.
Good unimproved land, upon which plenty of cheap water can be developed, averages $200 to $300 per acre. Improved orchard, vineyard, and alfalfa land sells at from $300 to $1,500 per acre, according to the age of the orchard and the completeness of the irrigating system.
