INTRODUCTORY

San Diego, the County Seat of San Diego County, is located on San Diego Bay, 126 miles south of Los Angeles, and 14 miles north of the International Boundary Line. Latitude 43 degrees, 41 minutes, 58 seconds North, Longitude 117 degrees, 13 minutes, 22 seconds West. The Climatic conditions are almost ideal. This favorable situation is brought about through the difference in at- mospheric pressure between the hot interior valleys and the Pa- cific Ocean. The result gives San Diego cool uniform days and nights, free from extremes or what is really the Summer tempera- ture of the Pacific Ocean.

The Bay of San Diego has an area of 22 square miles, is com- pletely land locked and has a depth of 39 feet over the bar at low water.

In keeping with the growth of the community, the city recent- ly spent a large sum on harbor improvements. This expenditure provided a Municipal Pier, Warehouse, Administration Building and 2600 feet of bulkhead, took care of a large amount of dredging and gave to the city 80 acres of valuable filled in Tide Lands. The city still owns 1320 acres of tide lands-a stupendous asset perhaps possessed by no other city in the world.

Perhaps no better evidence can be offered of San Diego's many and unusual advantages of location, climate, bay, harbor and gen- eral surroundings than is shown in the preferences extended by the Federal Government.

Briefly stated they are as follows :

Camp Kearny-U. S. Army Encampment.

U. S. Naval Base.

U. S. Naval Training Station.

U. S. Marine Corps Base.

U. S. Navy Repair Yard.

U. S. Marine Ways.

U. S. Army Aviation School-Two Fields.

U. S. Navy Aviation School.

U. S. Naval Coaling Station.

U. S. Naval Fuel Oil Station.

U. S. Quarantine Station.

U. S. Submarine Operating Base.

Fort Rosecrans-Coast Artillery.

U. S. Naval High Power Radio Station.

U. S. Naval Radio Station.

Training Port for Vessels of Pacific Fleet.

San Diego is the greatest military rendezvous ever created west of Chicago, all branches of the Army and Navy being repre- sented.

The County of San Diego contains almost 2,700,000 acres, but as the eastern part is mountainous, not more than 500,000 acres are suitable for agricultural purposes. On the other hand these moun- tainous districts offer to the visitor quite as enchanting bits of scenery as can be found on the coast.

79

The western part of the county is divided into a series of irreg- ular terraces or plateaus. The lower, or coast terrace, practically frostless, comprises a number of valleys with intervening mesa lands. Next comes a series of higher valleys varying in elevation from 400 to 1500 feet. The third series includes the foothill dis- tricts, with numerous small valleys, nooks and glens with an ele- vation of 2500 to 4000 feet.

The city owns its water system which is valued at $6,500,000. The source of supply is the impoundment in reservoirs of the flow of the mountain streams, and the natural underground reservoir of the San Diego river adjacent to the city.

The present supply is adequate and can be largely increased when necessary. The yield from available sources is approximately 30 billion gallons per annum. The average daily consumption is 10 million gallons, supplied at a cost to the consumer of 8 cents per thousand gallons.

Of great importance to any city is the question of transporta- tion. The Santa Fe Railroad has long been established in this ter- ritory, affording facilities of this immense system. Only a short time ago this road expended in San Diego the sum of $500,000 in permanent improvements.

The San Diego and Arizona Railway was completed December 1, 1919, giving San Diego the shortest transcontinental railroad in the United States. The distance from San Diego to El Centro over the new line is 148 miles, thus bringing this city in direct rail communication with the fertile Imperial Valley and the highly pro- ductive areas of Arizona, New Mexico and other parts of the Southwest. San Diego, with its splendid harbor and shipping fa- cilities, is the logical shipping and distributing center for the out- put of the great farming belts just east of the city.

San Diego County has many hundreds of miles of boulevards and roads, and is connected with Los Angeles via the Coast Route by a paved highway. The State Highway to Imperial Valley is in the course of construction. The county is destined to become a "Mecca" for autoists, as its splendid roadways traverse some of the most interesting country from both an historical and scenic standpoint, in Southern California. At the present time San Diego County has under construction new highways to cost $2,300,000.

In almost every part of the so-called back country accommo- dations can be had at most pleasing and desirable resorts. This permits of traveling leisurely or of remaining quietly in the one which best suits the individual taste. To those who desire to lo- cate permanently in a community where the standard of the school system is high, where church facilities are of the best and where the means of recreation are varied and refined, San Diego offers much. To children and those advanced in years the city is espe- cially inviting, and for the business man with capital many oppor- tunities exist.
