FACTS ABOUT SAN DIEGO
Prepared by Publicity Bureau SAN DIEGO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
San Diego, county seat of San Diego county, is situated six- teen miles north of the Mexican border on a beautiful bay of the same name. It is a typically modern city. The climate is one of the most equable and salubrius in the world, there being no ex- tremes of heat or cold. San Diego is most ideally situated. The site comprises a series of small valleys and hills, and the eleva- tions afford a panoramic view which is unexcelled. The placid waters of the bay, the waves of the Pacific and the distant moun- tains present a picture of which one never grows tired.
The citizens of San Diego are progressive, and in laying out the city have ever kept in mind the possibilities of future growth. Wide streets and boulevards obviate congestion and the large area embraced within the corporate limits makes possible the building of a great industrial, commercial and residential city.
The Bay of San Diego has an area of 22 square miles, is com- pletely land-locked and has a depth of 39 feet over the bar at low water.
In keeping with the growth of the community, the city has spent a large sum on harbor improvements. This expenditure pro- vided a Municipal Pier, Warehouse, Administration Building, and 2600 feet of bulkhead, took care of a large amount of dredging and gave to the city 80 acres of valuable filled-in Tide Lands. The city still owns 1320 acres of tide lands-a stupendous asset per- haps possessed by no other city in the world.
Perhaps no better evidence can be offered of San Diego's many and unusual advantages of location, climate, bay, harbor and general surroundings than is shown in the preferences extended by the Federal Government.
Briefly they are :
Camp Kearny-U. S. Public Service Hospital No. 64.
U. S. Naval Base for Eleventh Naval District. ..
U. S. Naval Training Station.
U. S. Naval Hospital.
U. S. Marine Corps Base.
U. S. Naval Repair Base.
U. S. Army Aviation School-Two Fields.
U. S. Naval Air Station.
U. S. Naval Coaling Station.
U. S. Naval Fuel Oil Station.
U. S. Quarantine Station.
U. S. Submarine Operating Base.
Fort Rosecrans-Coast Artillery.
U. S. Naval High Power Radio Station.
U. S. Naval Radio Station.
Training Port for Vessels of Pacific Fleet.
According to high naval officers, San Diego is to be made a second Hampton Roads. The most modern facilities of all kinds are being installed.
77
The County of San Diego contains almost 2,700,000 acres, but as the eastern part is mountainous, not more than 500,000 acres are suitable for agricultural purposes. On the other hand these mountainous districts offer to the visitor quite as enchanting bits of scenery as can be found on the coast.
The western part of the county is divided into a series of ir- regular terraces or plateaus. The lower, or coast terrace, prac- tically frostless, comprises a number of valleys with intervening mesa lands. Next comes a series of higher valleys varying in ele- vation from 400 to 1500 feet. The third series includes the foothill districts, with numerous small valleys, nooks and glens with an elevation of 2500 to 4000 feet.
The city owns its water system which is valued at $8,000,000. The source of supply is the impoundment in reservoirs of the flow of the mountain streams, and the natural underground reservoir of the San Diego river adjacent to the city.
The present supply is adequate and can be largely increased when necessary. The yield from available sources is approximately 30 billion gallons per annum. The average daily consumption is 10 million gallons, supplied at a cost to the consumer of 8 cents per thousand gallons.
Of great importance to any city is the question of transporta- tion. The Santa Fe Railroad has long been established in this ter- ritory, affording facilities of this immense system. This road has expended in San Diego the sum of $500,000 in permanent improve- ments.
The San Diego and Arizona Railway was completed Decem- ber 1, 1919, giving San Diego the shortest transcontinental rail- road in the United States. The distance from San Diego to El Centro over the new line is 148 miles, thus bringing this city in direct rail communication with the fertile Imperial Valley and the highly productive areas of Arizona, New Mexico, and other parts of the Southwest. San Diego, with its splendid harbor and ship- ping facilities, is the logical shipping and distributing center for the output of the great farming belts just east of the city.
San Diego County has many hundreds of miles of boulevards and roads, and is connected with Los Angeles via the Coast Route by a paved highway. The State Highway to Imperial Valley is in the course of construction. The county is destined to become a "Mecca" for autoists, as its splendid roadways traverse some of the most interesting country from both an historical and scenic standpoint in Southern California. At the present time San Diego County has under construction new highways to cost $2,300,000.
In almost every part of the so-called back country accommo- dations can be had at most pleasing and desirable resorts. This permits of traveling leisurely or of remaining quietly in the one which best suits the individual taste. To those who desire to lo- cate permanently in a community where the standard of the school system is high, where church facilities are of the best, and where the means of recreation are varied and refined, San Diego offers much. To children and those advanced in years the city is especial- ly inviting, and for the business man with capital many opportun- ities exist.
