INTRODUCTION
The 1924 edition of the San Diego City and County Directory is herewith presented to our patrons, with the conviction that it surpasses all previous issues in completeness of information and typographical excellence. Every effort has been put forth to make a complete and accurate Directory that will meet the requirements of business and pro- fessional men and the public in general.
The statistics presented following this introduction are instructive to residents as well as to the thousands who consult the Directory Libraries maintained in all the prin- cipal cities, where copies of this Directory are placed by the publishers.
DIRECTORY LIBRARIES. Copies of the latest editions of Directories of other cities throughout the United States and Canada are on file in the Directory Libraries maintained at the Merchants Association, 608 Electric Bldg., and at the Chamber of Commerce, Broadway and 2d, where they are accessible to the general public for single free reference.
ALPHABETICAL. The Directory contains 1319 pages. The San Diego alpha- betical section begins at page 191 and ends at page 982. The County section, in which all cities and towns in the County, except San Diego, are arranged alphabetically, begins at page 983 and ends at page 1166.
CLASSIFIED. The Classified Business Directory is embraced in pages 1167 to 1315.
BUYERS' GUIDE. This feature occupies pages 2 to 120. In this department will be found, classified according to line of business and profession, display advertisements of those engaged in various industries and professions.
STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE is included in pages 151 to 189.
MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT, pages 129 to 150 includes a variety of mis- cellaneous information such as the City, County, State and Federal Governments, Churches, Post Office Department, Business Buildings, Societies, Clubs, etc.
POPULATION
There are 58,920 names in the San Diego section of the Directory indicating a popu- lation of 132.570 being an increase of 6,339 since our last issue. This result is arrived at by multiplying the number of names by 21/4 to allow for the women and chil- dren whose names do not appear in the Directory.

FACTS ABOUT SAN DIEGO Prepared by Publicity Bureau SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA CLUB
San Diego's notable development during the last ten years, when the population increased well past the 100,000 mark, and the city's industrial and commercial prestige started on the ascendency, gives every indication of con- tinuing in a steady, substantial manner in the future.
In common with many communities in Southern California, San Diego has progressed remarkably along a number of lines. The handicap of other years-comparative isolation because of geographical location-has been elim- inated and today San Diego ranks in relative importance with San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle in the minds of people in other parts of the country. This favorable condition is due to a number of factors, chief of which are the impressive recognition given this city by the federal government in creating a great naval establishment on San Diego harbor; the additional transporta- tion facilities afforded by the San Diego & Arizona Railway and its connec- tions, the Southern Pacific and Rock Island Lines; the additional number of steamship companies making San Diego a port of call; the national advertis- ing and publicity campaigns conducted by the San Diego-California Club, and the aggressiveness of the Chamber of Commerce in embarking upon a definite plan for the acquisition of more industries.
San Diego harbor, one of the three great natural harbors on the Pacific Coast of the United States, and possessing practically unlimited commercial potentialities, is gradually being developed to meet the growing needs of the metropolitan district. Flanking the harbor are the extensive establishments of the United States government, the more important of these projects being the U. S. Marine Corps Base and the adjoining U. S. Naval Training Station ; the Army and Navy Aviation stations, and the destroyer base. In Balboa Park is the great naval hospital, which ultimately will be large enough to serve the entire needs of the Pacific Fleet.
The harbor also is ideal for yachting and other aquatic sports, which each year gain a wider following. Recreational facilities extend to the seven splendid beaches, the most distant being 24 miles; and to the mountains, where a score or more of attractive inns and resorts may be reached in an hour or two over paved and well graded roads. The uplands of San Diego County are gaining in popularity with residents as well as visitors, and during the last year or two a number of mountain tracts, offering most charming cabin sites, have been placed on the market.
Of particular interest, and indicative of the expansion of the metropolitan district, has been the very decided movement toward the seashore. Ocean frontage development projects such as the Mission Beach enterprise, includ- ing a stimulation of activity at Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach, and the up- ward trend at La Jolla, are traceable in part to the construction of the new high speed electric line of the San Diego Electric Railway Company through
128
Mission Beach to La Jolla. The result has been a marked stiffening of realty values and a lively demand for beach lots and homesites adjacent to and over- looking the Pacific Ocean. Development of all the territory between San Diego proper and La Jolla has now reached such a stage as to justify the con- viction that settlement of the ocean shore between these points, and even beyond, is a matter of a comparatively few years.
Keeping pace with the city, there has been noted a pronounced develop- ment of the so-called "back country". The good roads movement is consist- ently being carried forward, and thousands of acres of heretofore arid land are being brought under water through the completion of irrigation projects of far-reaching magnitude.
A network of superb highways spreads in all directions from San Diego. This city is the western terminus of several transcontinental automobile routes which, converging at El Paso, Texas, continue to the Pacific Coast over, practically the same route. These highways enable motorists to come direct to San Diego over the most southern routes, open throughout the year, from all points in the middle west and east.
No city in the United States has a better quality of water than that which citizens of San Diego draw from their faucets. Its source is high in the mountains, the peaks of which catch the rains and snows of the winter season and divert them into great reservoirs where they are uncontaminated from sewage and refuse. There are four city-owned reservoirs, Morena, Barrett, Upper Otay and Lower Otay, and three emergency sources of water supply.
San Diego is probably more fortunately situated, in respect to water sup- ply, than any other Southern California city. Upwards of forty billions of gallons of water were stored in the city reservoirs following the limited rains of the winter of 1923-24, and this supply, at the present and anticipated rate of consumption, is estimated to be sufficient for at least three years, even if the interim should be a "dry" period.
Climatic conditions are ideal. The normal annual temperature is 61 de- grees. The average annual percentage of sunshine is 68, which is a very high average, and surpasses most cities in the United States.
Fourth city in population in California.
Nine banks; capital $3,375,000; deposits, $55,000,000.
City of the second class.
Nearest port of entry for trade with Orient and through Panama canal. Nearer to Chicago and the East than any other Pacific port.
Nearly 100 miles of street railway.
Average but nine days each year without some degree of sunshine.
Balboa Park, third largest in United States.
Operates under modified form of city manager plan, with council of five members.
Extremely low infant mortality rate.
San Diego bay discovered by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542.
First mission erected in 1769.
San Diego County contains 4200 square miles.
