A SKETCH OF THE CHURCH & ITS MINISTERS IN LEBANON GOSHEN.
The church in Lebanon Goshen is a branch from the first church in Lebanon, and was organ- ized Nov. 26th, A. D. 1729.
The first church in Lebanon appears to have been divided on amicable terms. 'The only rea- son given in the record, why the people living in the south part of the parish wished to form a new church is, that they " thought it would be for the best good of Christ's Kingdom."
The parish of Goshen, at its formation in- cluded what is now the parish of Exeter, and thus continued until 1773, when it was divided.
11
The first minister of Goshen was Rev. Jacob Eliot. who was ordained and installed the same day that the church was organized.
Mr. Eliot was a native of Boston, Mass. and was educated at Harvard College. With great acceptance and success, he sustained the pastoral office among this people. During his ministry a- bout 350 persons were added to the church. His death occurred April 12th, 1766, in the 69th year of his age, and 37th of his ministry.
Mr. Eliot was succeeded by Rev. Timothy Stone, who was ordained and installed Sept. 30th 1767. Mr. Stone was a native of Guilford, and graduated at Yale College. He was regarded as a man of talent, and one who magnified his office, or entertained exalted views of its dignity, solemni- ty and importance. During his ministry, about 100 persons were admitted to the church. He died May 12th, 1797, in the 55th year of his age, and 30th of his ministry.
1 Rev. William B. Ripley, the third minister of this parish, was installed Nov. 14th, 1798. He was a native of Fairfield, graduated at Yale Cul- . lege, and was subsequently chosen a member of its corporation. He was ordained and first install- ed pastor of a church in Ballston, N. Y., and came from that place to Goshen. During the first twenty years of his ministry here, the num- ber of deaths in this society, as stated by him, was 121. The number admitted to the church while he was pastor, was about 75. His pastoral rela- tion to this people was dissolved by death July 26th, 1822, in the 54th year of his age and 25th of his ministry in this place.
12
It will be noticed that the first three pastors of this church terminated their ministry here, by death. 'Their graves are all to be found in the parish cemetery.
Rev. Wm. B. Ripley was succeeded by Rev. Erastus Ripley, who was previously pastor of a church in Meriden, whence he came to Goshen ; and was here installed Sept 24th, 1823. He re- mained pastor of this people between 8 and 9 years, admitted to the church nearly 100 members, and was dismissed from his pastoral charge Feb. 16th, 1832. After this, he preached several years in Montville, and then returned to Meriden, where he died Nov. 17th, 1843, aged 73.
After the dismissal of Mr. Ripley, Rev. Salmon Cone, previously pastor of a church in Colchester, for 38 years, preached to this people, as a stated supply, for about two years, and died, March 24th, 1834, aged 68.
Rev. Israel T. Otis of Colchester, the fifth set- ·tled minister in this place, was ordained and in- stalled June 10th, 1835. The term of his minis- try here was a little less than nine years. Dur- ing this time, about 60 persons were admitted to the church. He was dismissed from his pastoral charge March 20th, 1844.
Rev. Joshua R. Brown, the present pastor was ordained and installed May 21st, 1845.
The first Meeting House in this parish was e- rected in 1730-1,-was located on Goshen Hill, and occupied as a house of public worship until 1801, when a change of location was determined upon, and the present house erected in that and the following year.
VOTES OF THE CHURCH.
August 27th, 1838 .--- Voted : That this churchit require from all persons who come from other churches to reside in this society, and commune with this church, a letter of dismission from the church to which they last belonged, and also of recommendation to this church, within the term of one year from the time such persons come to reside [in this society] and commune with this church, and if any persons shall neglect to com- ply with this requirement, they will be excluded from communing with this church, unless they give satisfactory reasons why such requirement has not been complied with.

" The Lord knoweth them that are His. And let every one that nameth the name of Christ, de- part from iniquity.
Be ye therefore followers of God as dear chil- dren, and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us.
Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding a- bundantly, above all that we ask or think, accord- ing to the power that worketh in us, unto Him be glory in the church, by Christ. Jesus, throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. "
