INTRODUCTION.
WETHERSFIELD was settled in October, 1635, by a colony from Watertown, Massachusetts. The colonists were accompanied, or soon after joined, by two English clergymen, Rev. Henry Smith and Rev. Richard Denton. Both, it is probable, supplied the place of a minister until the spring of 1638 or '9, when they were succeeded by the Rev. Peter Prudden. It was not the intention of Mr. Prudden to make Wethersfield his permanent residence, but a place of tempo- rary sojourn, until he and his friends could select a suitable spot for a plantation. Meanwhile, he supplied the pulpit of Wethersfield, and probably remained in the town until the time of his installation as pastor at Milford, April 18th, 1640.
Several of the inhabitants of Wethersfield became so warmly attached to Mr. Prudden, that they followed him to Milford and were among the first and prin- cipal settlers of that town. During the succeeding autumn, a still greater draft was made upon the strength and numbers of the people, by the removal of many, in consequence of a long standing controversy, which could not be other- wise amicably adjusted. They purchased and settled the town now called Stamford. Early in the spring of 1641, Rev. Mr. Smith, the first preacher in this place, resumed his ministrations among the people, and was installed pastor of the church, which was at that time legally organized. The number of mem- bers which it embodied is unknown, as no church record of that date exists. Among them were Joseph Sherman, Joseph Strickland, Robert Coe, Robert Reynolds and James Weed, who had been regularly dismissed from the church at Watertown. Soon after the settlement of Mr. Smith, a bitter controversy arose between the people and their pastor, which was prosecuted with una- bated zeal, until in 1648 his weary body found its rest in the grave, and his vexed spirit in heaven. How long after his decease the church remained desti- tute of a pastor, can not now be ascertained-probably not more than two years. Mr. Smith was succeeded by the Rev. John Russell. Of his ministry, little is known. The latter part of it, however, like that of his predecessor, was a pe- riod of dissension, which resulted in the spring of 1659, in the removal of Mr. Russell, followed by all the members of his church except six, to Massachu- setts, where they commenced the settlement of the town of Hadley.
From that date, through a period of eight years, the church was destitute of a settled pastor, enjoying only the temporary ministrations of Rev, John Cotton, Jr., Rev. Joseph Haynes, Rev. Thomas Buckingham and Rev. Jonathan Wil- loughby.
In 1667, Rev. Gershom Bulkley was invited " to come and be helpful to the people of Wethersfield in the Gospel ministry." To this Mr. Bulkley consented,
4
on condition that a colleague pastor should be associated with him. The town complied with his request, and Mr. Bulkley, with Rev. Samuel Stone, was ill- stalled pastor of this church during the autumn of that year. The united min- istry of Messrs. Bulkley and Stone continued until the 9th of June, 1669, when Mr. Stone was dismissed. Although Mr. Bulkley was in the pastoral office about ten years, nothing is known of the history of the church during his ministry. It does not appear, however, that anything occurred to interrupt its harmony, or hinder its prosperity. Mr. Bulkley was dismissed, at his own request, in the early part of 1677. He was succeeded in the same year by Rev. Joseph Row- landson, who tarried not long. His Master bade him " come up higher," in November, 1678.
Rev. John Woodbridge was installed pastor in 1679, and resigned his minis- try with his life, in 1691.
Rev. Stephen Mix succeeded Mr. Woodbridge in 1694. His account of a long ministry of forty-four years was sealed up, August 28th, 1738. The earli- est known records of the church, are in the hand-writing of Mr. Mix, and con- sist mcrely of memoranda of baptisms.
Rev. James Lockwood was ordained his successor, February 28th, 1739, just prior to the memorable revival of 1740, which highly blessed New England. During the ministry of Mr. Lockwood, the celebrated Whitefield made his first and second visits to New England. The people of Wethersfield were favored with his instructions and felt their power. This was probably the first revival with which this ancient church was visited. The number of converts is said to have been large. But the only record of their number and names is in " the Lamb's Book of Life," Mr. Lockwood closed his labors and entered into rest in 1772, aged fifty-nine, having served his Divine Master thirty-three years in the ministry.
Rev. John Marsh, D. D., was ordained pastor, January 12, 1774; died Sep- tember 13, 1821, in the seventy-ninth year of his age and the forty-eighth of his ministry.
Rev. Caleb J. Tenney, D. D., was installed March 27, 1816; dismissed January 12, 1841.
Rev. Charles J. Warren was installed July 1, 1835; dismissed February 1, 1837.
Rev. Robert Southgate was installed February 7, 1838; dismissed Novem- ber 22, 1843.
Rev. Mark Tucker, D. D., was installed October 15, 1845.

THE COVENANT
OF THE FIRST CHURCH IN WETHERSFIELD.
You, who present yourself in this public manner, are now with all your heart and with all your soul, to enter into solemn covenant with God and this church :
Admiring the infinite condescension and grace of God in opening a door of life and salvation for perishing sinners, through the media- tion and death of Jesus Christ, together with a sense of your own great unworthiness ; you do now make choice of the living God for your God ; of God, the Father, for your Father ; of the Lord Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, for your Lord and Saviour ; of the Holy Ghost for your Sanctifier and Comforter, and of the word of God for the rule of your life and practice.
And you do dedicate and give up yourself to God, to be only his ; to be guided by his Spirit ; to be ruled by his laws ; to be disposed of by his providence, and to be eternally saved in the Gospel way ; promising by the help of Christ, (without which you can do noth- ing, ) that you will live soberly, righteously, and godly, all your days.
You do, likewise, covenant and bind yourself to walk with this church of Christ, in all the ways of God's ordinances, submitting to the discipline and government of this church, according to the rules of the gospel.
Thus you give up yourself to God and promise to live to Him, and to walk in holy fellowship with this church.
