CONFESSION OF FAITH and COVENANT OF THE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH IN SOUTHINGTON
TO WHICH IS ADDED : CATALOGUE OF VETERS CONN.
NEW HAVEN 1851
---
1
Confession of Faith and Covenant of the Congregational Church in Southington; to which is added a Catalogue of members. New Haven: Printed by B. L.Hamlen, Printer to Yale College 1351.
This church record was brought to Pennsylvania by Conestoga wagon. when they came as pioneers to Crawford County, Penna. They took up land at Centerville, Crawford Co. when it was a wilderness. My Great grand mother Sarah Clark Crissey (daughter of Gould Crissey and Eunice (Mors) mar. Alphin Clark son of Elisha, son of David, son of David, son of Samuel, son of Samuel, son of James and John of New Haven).
Alphin Clark and his wife Sarah Clark Crissey had two sons (1) Frederick, killed by the fall of a tree; (2) James, of Centerville Crawford Co. Penna. James mar. Julia Bement (Beaumont, old spel. ) of Connecticut 1st
daughter of Daniel Bement ( of Centerville, Crawford County, Penna. ) and Nancy Kimball of Connecticut. This record was very precious to Sarah Crissey for the names of many relations were contained in it, Love has kept it almost 200 years.
There are many descendants from this family in the United States and many who may find help in the records of this church. My prayer is that the faith and liberty loving spirit, the simplicity and ambition of our historical past may be preserved.

for a meeting house, and should lay .. tax efficient to raise the sul of one hundred and fifty rounds, current norey, which should be carefully laid out in building the first meeting house.
"The question being wat to the Society, if they consented that the Southern. Farmers might be a ministerial Society, according to the terms of said report, the answer thereto was in the affirmative by a clear water vote. " This vote was passed Dec. 56. 1720; and at the next sesich of the General Assembly, the following petition was presented in behalf of ecid Southern Farmers.
"To the Honorable the General Assembly, sitt- ing at Hartford, May the 14th, 1724.
The mencrial of Benjamin Denton, and the rest of the inhabitants of a place called Fanthorn, in the southwesterly rart of Farmington; humbly sheweth, that the first Society in Farmington, ( to which we at present belong, ) at their meet- ing the 26th of December, 1726, solemnly reflect- ing uron our extreme rencteness from the place of God's public worshi;, &c. ; granted ne their consent, to be a Society of ourselves.

hinself and the rest of said Societ:, to retitica the Legislature, for liberty to lay a tax of the rence on the acre, on non-residental lunds. In con: liance with his instructions, he presented his Petition to the General Assenbly, in The. in which it is stated, "that through the ale dulgence of the Assembler , they have iais the foundation of a new Society for their attendance on public worshir, that they have already been in considerable advance towards ACCOMMOdating a Gospel Minister in his settlement, and that much now must of necessity be advanced, in building a meeting house, minister's House, and other things requisite for a Society; that as it is the corron
fate of new beginning Societies, so we wanting ronev to carry on those affairs; Honors

This petition was granted, and they were authorized to levy a tax of one ; enny on the acre. for twelve years, on the Hands of non-residents, and at the same time the - of Southington 188 esablished by the Gener ... Assembly, as the name of the Society.
From these facts it arrears, that the Society at its first organization, was small and feeble, yet they proceeded at once to build their meeting house, which was ercoted at the southeast rart of the burying ground, about one mile north of the present meeting house. The house was small, as arrears by the tinbers, which now constitute the frame of a building near the centre of the tour. It is probable that they commenced meeting in their new house about the year 1726, as they commenced burying in the graverard near where the house stood about that time.

No mention is made of ary minister excent Mr. Buck, before the settlement of Vr. Curtias in 1788: nor can it be known with certainty who were the first members of the Church.

The solund Wella house of the Society mo erected in 1707; and stood in the centre of the green, a few rods nearly Erst of the rresont house of worship.
The corner-stone of the present Meeting House was laid December 15, 1808. The house WAS CE- rietel June 3, 1800; dedicabet June 26. 1830. The sermon on the occasion was treathet by Per. D. L. Ceden, from Isaiah 60: 15 -- the last part of the verse.
The following extracts from the Church Pecoras will show the origin of the : resent Confession of Faith and Covenant of the Church, with the exception of one or two slight alterations since male.
At a meeting of the Church Nov. 15, 1779,
"Voted that Des. James Smith, Dea. Timothy Clark, Dea. Jonathan Woodruff, Josiah Nowles, and Jonathan Andrus, be a Committee to confer with Mr. Robinson uron a rian of Church Discipline, and make report of it at the next meeting, "
At the next meeting, Nov. Ooth, of the same year,
"voted unanimously won the report of the Committee to confer with Vr. Robinson, to astet and adopt the Confession of Faith, Church ACT- enant, and articles of Pisci line, as exhibited by then, and agreed uron between them and Vr. Robinson. =

CONFESSION OF FAITH
You believe, that thereis one, and but one / God: subsisting in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, in when are all perfections.
That God made and upholds all things by his power and is the Supere Governor of all worlds.
2
3
That the Holy Scriptures are the word of God. and are a perfect rule of faith and manners.
1
That God nade man upright, and crisin- ally standed upon his image of knowledge, right- cousness, and true hciiness.
!
That the first man Adam, by transgressing God's command, plunged himself with All his rosterity into a state of sin and misery.
6 That it pleased God from eternity to choose some of fallen men to everlasting life, through sanotification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: and so in the fullness of time he sent his only-begotten Son, born of a woman, to dem thema be :_ under the curse of the law.
7
, That Jesus Christ is the only Savior of men; neither is there salvation in any other, nor any other name given under heaven among men, by which we must be saved.
-
-- That there are certain special ordinances, Paptism and the Lord's Supper, instituted by Christ as seals of the Covenany of Grace; which are. therefore, in a religious manner, to be observed by his followers.
8 That faith in Christ is the only term of justification in the sight of God; that faith which, while it works by love, is ever connected with goldv sorrow. and productive of new obed- ience.
6
-. That We wish is to be chinistered to unbaptized adults who profes their faith in Christ, and their infant children; und to the infact children of all who by public profession belong to the household of faith.
That the Lord's Supper being appointed to show forth the wrath of Christ, and to amil unto true believers the benefits ci his relegation. especially their spiritual nourishment and growth in grace, for the acochrlishment of these import- uht purposes, is to be continued in the church till the second coming of the Lord.
Finally you believe that God has dipointed a day in which he will judge the world vy desus Chriss; and that in that day, they who have done you shall be absolved and acquitted, and made perfectly blessed in the full enjoyment of God; but they that have done evil, and died in imveniteroy, shall be punished in blackness of darkness forever and ever.
Thus in the presence of Almighty God, you solemnly profeso and believe.
COTFTANT. *******
You do now in the presence of Cod, and before angels andmen, who are witnesses to this tran- saction, solemnly avouch the Lord Jehovah, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, to be your God.
You do also take the sacred Scriptures to be your only rule of faith and practice; together with yourself, giving w all you have to God in Christ, avouching the Lord to be your God.
You acknowledge, that bynature and practice you are sinful, and that all your hopes of par- don and salvation are built only on the sovereign moroy of God, through the righteousness and satisfaction of Jesus Christ.
-
You do. therefore, considering Christ a3 the way, the truth, and the life, now take him as your only Savior, your Trophet, Friest, and King; solemnly promising, through the help of divine grace, that you will Jive in all respects accord- ing to the files and precepts of the Gospel; that you will carefully trend of all the ordinances of it; And that subrist to the discipline and government of Christ, in this Church.
Thus in the presence of cod, ICH Ala May covenant und Preise.
7
The Moth this Church likewise the Church will rise) promise you, that in the strength of divine grace, we will walk towards you in all .... watchfulness and charity -- verfering all those duties which our shared relation, 23 members of the same household of faith de.unds.
