EARLY CONNECTICUT MARRIAGES.

PREFACE.

Encouraged by the unexpected interest taken in our first book of " Early Connecticut Marriages" which now seems to be fulfilling its purpose; and desirous of assisting still further the efforts of persistent seekers scattered all over our vast country who would know still more of their early Connecticut ancestors, this second book is so soon issued; being well assured that if original data is required this will prove to be even more useful than the first.

While certain to be of service to many in supplying needful facts and dates long sought for, it will necessarily prove disappointing to others, who finding not just what they want, must still longer struggle with the old and perplexing problems.

Realizing too truly how humble our effort is thus to bring to view a portion of the valuable genealogical matter hidden away in obscure quarters of the state, our own regret is that with what is even here dis- closed absolute completeness in every detail cannot be secured. For not only have the years left their destroying impress upon many a page, but in other cases difficult indeed would it be to tell just what was there- in written. If in this particular we seem to criticise the pastor's scrawling hand, that in some cases was quite unique, we stand ready to defend him against critics who in reading herein will see instead a spelling of names seemingly unjustified. So far as our endeavor is concerned we have followed closely the text. And in defense of the minister's apparent mistakes here it might well be agreed that in those days there was no standard for the spelling of surnames, however much the Holy Scrip- tures may have guided all in the construction of Christian names. Educated though he was, the art of printing, so limited in its employ- ment then, had not touched a subject which, by the common use of the printing press to-day, is fixed in every man's mind. On some of the old town records a single page will bear the same surname spelled in several different ways, merely from the want of a standard which even the owner himself could not set. However, it is a matter deserving fuller treatment

historically by some able specialist who may settle forever some such questions as thus stand in the way to successful search. Our desire is to warn the reader not to allow any peculiar spelling of a name to throw him off the track, nor fail to give due weight to every naine that in any degree could resemble that sought for. It has been observed that in a few extraordinary cases marked changes have occurred in some names to puzzle and bewilder the seeker; but in the large majority of instances it were well to follow the slight variations to their legitimate end.

For the benefit of those who do not quite understand how it is that our records all come from the Congregational church, a word may well be added to what has already been written in the Preface of the first book. Not alone is it because such records are found to be the oldest and the best, but it is well to remember that from the beginning of the settlement in 1635 to the year 1705, while there were, scattered here and there, a few Baptists, Episcopalians and Friends, no other organization of any kind existed. The whole territory was entirely theirs till, in 1705, a Baptist society was organized in Groton which stood alone of its kind for twenty years. In 1726 the second was formed at New London; and not till 1743 was the third, at North Stonington, to be found.

Up to this time there had been but little deviation from the tenets of Congregationalism, though with the organization of the Baptists in the East, the few isolated Episcopaliaus of the West, after persistent effort from the year 1706, had succeeded in organization at Fairfield in 1723 the first Connecticut Episcopal parish. Yet the year 1750 found the latter with but twenty-five struggling parishes against 147 Congrega- tional located in all parts of the colony.

As to the Methodists their first society was organized at Stratford in 1789.

Should the success of this issue warrant a continuation of the work, it is to be hoped records of other organizations may be included, but it may be well here to state that Connecticut Churchmen themselves have had occasion to regret that their older parishes, from one reason and another, have preserved comparatively so few records of their early life and activity.

NEW LONDON COUNTY.

The first Congregational Church was organized at Gloucester, Mass., in 1642, removing from thence in 1650 to New London. Consequently we would here correct the mistake made in the Preface of the First Book "Early Connecticut Marriages " and number this as the roth instead of the 13th Congregational Church organization of the state.
