HISTORICAL NOTICE.
THE First Church in East Hartford has been con- stituted one hundred and sixty-five years. The town of Hartford was settled by a company from Boston, (Mass.,) and the vicinity in 1635; and the First Church formed there, had the Rev. THOMAS HOOKER for its Pastor, and the Rev. SAMUEL STONE for its Teacher. Settlements early began to be made on the East side of the river, and in 1695, the Third Church in Hartford (now the First Church in East Hartford,) was formed ; the Second or South Church having been previously formed in 1669. It was not till 1783 that this town was divided from Hartford, and known by its present name of East Hartford. Six Pastors have been installed over this Church. The first was the Rev. SAMUEL WOODBRIDGE, who was ordained in 1705, ten years after the formation of the Church, and who died June 9, in 1746, in the sixty-third year of his age, and the forty-first of his ministry.
The Rev. ELIPHALET WILLIAMS, D. D., was the second Pastor. He was ordained March 30, in 1748, and died June 29th, in 1803, in the seventy-eighth year of his age and the fifty-sixth of his ministry. As Colleague Pastor with Dr. WILLIAMS, Rev. ANDREW YATES was installed December 23d, in 1801, and in
4
1813 was removed to fill a Professorship in Union College, Schenectady.
The next Pastor was the Rev. JOY H. FAIRCHILD, who was ordained in 1816, and after laboring in this field eleven years, was dismissed at his own request.
He was succeeded by the Rev. ASA MEAD, who was installed in 1830, and died 26th October, 1831.
The Present Pastor, the Rev. SAMUEL SPRING, was installed February 14th, 1833.
Three Houses of worship have been built in this place since the formation of the Church. The first stood about forty-five years. The second was built in 1740, and taken down in 1835, having been occupied about ninety-five years. The present house was ded- icated January 20th, 1836.
There have been twenty-four Deacons in this Church since its organization, exclusive of those who now hold this office. Their names, the time (when known,) of their induction into office, and of their death, follow :

ARTICLES OF FAITH.
-
ARTICLE I.
WE believe that there is one only living and true God, existing in three distinct persons, and one God- head, forever, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the same in substance, and equal in power and glory.
ARTICLE II.
We believe that the government of God is univer- sal, wise, just, and good, and that it is exercised in the works of creation, providence, and grace, according to his eternal purposes, whereby for his own glory he hath foreordained whatsoever comes to pass.
ARTICLE III.
We believe that God has given to men a rule to direct them how they may glorify and enjoy him; that this is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, which are an inspired revelation, and the only sufficient and infallible rule of faith and practice.
ARTICLE IV.
We believe that God created man upright, after his own image in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness ; but that by his fall he lost communion with God, and
8
in consequence of that act, all his posterity possess by nature a sinful character, and cannot, therefore, without regeneration, enter the kingdom of Heaven.
ARTICLE V.
We believe that the benefits of the great atonement for sin, made by the Lord Jesus Christ, are universal ; that the offers of salvation are made in the Gospel sincerely and indiscriminately to all men ; and that all have power to accept them ; but that such is the sinful- ness of the human heart, none will accept them unless influenced by the Holy Spirit.
ARTICLE VI.
We believe that this Divine Person is the exclusive author of regeneration; that all the saved will forever feel their indebtedness to the mere, sovereign mercy of God; that the native consequence and only proper evidence of their conversion, is a life of repentance, faith, and holy obedience; and that their prevailing desire and purpose will be to "do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God."
ARTICLE VII.
We believe that the Church is a Society duly con- stituted by the Lord Jesus Christ ; designed to continue to the end of the world, and to be composed only of penitent believers in him; that it is the duty of all real Christians to unite with it, and thus profess their faith and repentance ; that its only officers are Pastors and Deacons, and its only sacraments Baptism and the Lord's Supper.
.
9
ARTICLE VIII.
We believe that none are suitable partakers of the Lord's Supper, but such as are united to him by faith ; and that baptism is not to be administered to any who are out of the visible Church, till they profess their faith in Christ, and obedience to him; but the house- holds, and especially the infants, of such as are mem- bers of the visible Church, are to be baptized:
ARTICLE IX.
We believe that all who are renewed in the temper of their mind, will persevere in holiness ; that in virtue of the unchangeable covenant, they will be kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, and will not finally perish.
ARTICLE X.
We believe that there will be a resurrection of the dead, a re-union of the soul to the body, a final judg- ment of all men by the Lord Jesus Christ, and that the wicked will go away into everlasting punishment, and the righteous into life eternal.
Such are the doctrines believed by this Church. Do you cordially assent to them ?
COVENANT.
SENSIBLE that it is the most solemn transaction in which a creature of God can engage, to enter into covenant with the High and Holy One, and with his people, you do now devoutly look up to him, and while you call upon God, and angels, and men, to listen to the oath which the Lord maketh you to swear, and remember that your vows will be recorded on high, and produced at the Judgment, you ask, with an affect- ing view of your unworthiness, exposures, and depend- ence, that he will make and keep you faithful to your engagements.
You do then, in the presence of the Searcher of Hearts, and of this assembly, avouch the Lord Jeho- vah, Father, Word and Spirit, to be your God, your hope, your portion. You accept the Lord Jesus Christ to be your only propitiation for sin, and the Holy Ghost to be your sanctifier, comforter, and guide. You deliberately and cordially adopt the word of God, to be your rule of life ; the people of God to be your companions and friends ; the cause of God to be the object of your prayers and efforts; and the Heaven which he adorns and blesses, to be your desired and eternal home. You profess your love for the doctrines of the Gospel, your faith in the Redeemer of God's elect, your humble hope that through his abounding
11 :
mercy he has made you an heir of his kingdom, and your solemn purpose to walk, by divine aid, worthy of the vocation wherewith you are called.
You also covenant with this branch of Christ's Church, to walk with them in all the statutes and ordinances of the Lord, blameless ; to submit to, and maintain the scriptural discipline of Christ's house ; to avoid every thing that shall grieve even the weakest of his dear flock ; to do all that in you lies to promote their comfort, edification and purity ; to love, watch over, and pray with and for them ; and with all Chris- tian fidelity, circumspection, and meekness, to strive with them for the advancement of the glory of God and the salvation of men.
Thus you covenant and engage.
WE, then, as a Church, cordially receive you to our fellowship, acknowledging you as our well-beloved Brethren [or Sisters. ] in the Lord, and giving thanks to his great name, in that he has, as we trust, inclined you to obey his commands. We reciprocate your vows, and from the heart welcome you to all the privileges and duties, and trials of the church militant, and the glorious hopes of the church triumphant. And now may the Lord bless you, and make his face to shine upon you, and give you peace. May he who was embosomed in the pillar of fire, and in the cloud, go before you, and guide you to the promised rest of his people, and acknowledge you and us in a covenant never to be forgotten.
