PREFACE
This index of Frances M. Caulkins' "History of New London, Connecticut," was prepared from the edition published by H. D. Utley in 1895, press of The Day Publishing Company, New London, Conn. This edition was chosen as it is the one in most common use. Occa- sionally there may be found a slight variation in the paging if one of the older editions is used.
In the compiling of the index there has been an earnest attempt made to separate, as individuals, persons of the same name. By adding death dates or other data and carefully comparing items, this distinction has very often proved possible. Sometimes of course, it has not been possible. Ensign James Avery, Lieut. James Avery, and Capt. James Avery may be the same person at different periods in his career, but that cannot be always determined from the text. In the case of "Junior" and "Senior" the careful comparing of items and dates has been helpful.
In the index the name sought for may appear more than once on the page given. This fact should be kept in mind.
The memoir of Miss Caulkins is not included in the index.
Miss Caulkins says of the early settlers that in the oldest book of town records "the two Winthrops, John and Deane, are uniformly entitled 'Mr.,' as are also Jonathan Brewster and Robert Parke when they appear in the plantation; but all others are styled 'Goodman' or mentioned by Christian name and surname, without any prefix." So we find that when Miss Caulkins says "Mr. Winthrop" she probably means "John Winthrop" and when she says "Mr. Brewster" she means "Jona- than Brewster.' "
In this index Miss Caulkins' topical table of contents with some necessary additions and itemizing was first alphabetized, then the per- sonal names added, not from her list but by carefully reading, then checking each page. When these had been added the book was gone through again for the place names (which Miss Caulkins had neglected almost entirely), each page being read and checked in the same way for these.
This index was prepared over a period of years. Sometimes routine work in the Library made it difficult to work at it for long periods.
It is hoped that the index may prove helpful to many who have complained that they "never can find things" in this book.
My appreciation to the Trustees for making the publication of the index possible, to our Librarian, Mr. Frederick W. Edgerton, to the typist, and to the ever faithful members of the Library Staff.
