INTRODUCTORY NOTE.
SALISBURY old burying ground, the original church-yard, is an enclosure, nearly square, and containing some three-quarters of an acre of land. The town became possessed of it 29 May, 1750, by a deed of gift from Robert Walker of Stratford, an original pro- prietor of Salisbury. The earliest date recorded in the yard is that found upon the tomb-stone of Dr. Wade Clark, who died Aug. 6, 1750.
Since about the year 1830, when burials became infrequent, the yard has been kept in a fair state of repair. In general the inscrip- tions are well preserved. A few stones are broken ; a few are illeg- ible. There are many unknown graves.
Of the three hundred inscriptions in this pamphlet, some have been secured only by diligent effort. All of them have been care- fully verified. No stone has been wittingly left unturned.
