HISTORICAL SKETCHI.
IN November, 1860, a Sabbath School was opened in this part of the town for the many children who could not on account of the distance attend the churches in the city. A weekly prayer meeting was soon after established. Investi- gations having developed the fact that a large number of families living west of the railroad were wholly or in part debarred from church privileges, but would naturally fall into a church situated in the west part of the city ; in February, 1864, a meeting was called to consider the question of build- ing a church, and of organizing a new religious society. This meeting was attended by nearly twenty heads of fami- lies. After prayer for divine direction and free consultation, it was found that in the opinion of all present the time had come for action. It was felt, however, that in a matter of such grave importance, the advice and approbation of the churches in the city ought first to be solicited. A circular letter was accordingly addressed to them, to which they responded by the appointment of delegates. Two meetings were held at which the facts in the case were presented and the bearing of the proposed enterprise upon the other churches and the cause of Christ was considered. The re- sult was the adoption by a unanimous vote of the following resolution. " Resolved: that a new church is needed in the western part of the city." .
4
HISTORICAL SKETCH.
Soon after, an ecclesiastical society was formed, a building committee appointed, and also a committee to recommend some one as a pastor. On the 12th of March, 1865, our first public religious service was held in the chapel. On the 23d of the same month, our church was formed in the ancient New England method by formally accepting a creed and covenant which had been previously prepared. A few weeks subsequently in response to circular letters of invita- tion, our sister churches in the city, by their pastors and delegates extended to us their formal recognition and fellow- ship.
Of the whole number which constituted the church at its organization, 40 were from the Center church, 33 from the North church, 25 from the Pearl street church, 4 from the Fourth church, 2 from the South church, and the remaining 10 from churches out of the city. At our first meeting for worship in the chapel, before the invocation, the whole con- gregation rose and sang, in Old Hundred, the doxology, "Praise God from whom all blessings flow," and this custom has ever since been continued.
A Pastor was installed December 13th, 1865.
The church edifice was dedicated June 15th, 1866.
CONFESSION OF FAITH & COVENANT.
WE believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord ; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary ; suffered under Pontius Pilate ; was crucified, dead, and buried. The third day He rose from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints ; the forgiveness of sins; the res- urrection of the body ; and the life everlasting.
We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God to teach man- kind the way of life.
We believe that all men, apart from Christ and his Salva- tion, are lost and ruined in sin.
We believe that the righteous Lord loveth righteousness, that His face is against them which do evil: and that while He will show mercy to the penitent, he denounces everlasting punishment upon the incorrigibly wicked.
We believe that God has infinite compassion and love for sinful men and seeks to restore them to holiness and to save them from the just desert of their sins.

6
CONFESSION OF FAITII AND COVENANT.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the only Saviour, that He came into the world to manifest the love of God and to make atonement for sin : that by faith in Him we receive forgive- ness of sins and inheritance among them which are sanctified.
We believe that by the Holy Ghost men are moved to repentance and faith, and to all the good thoughts and pur- poses of a holy life.
We believe that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are revealed in the Scriptures as the one Living God.
We hold that Baptism and the Lord's Supper were insti- tuted by our Lord as sacramental rites to be observed by all believers.
That all who with the heart believe in Christ and receiv- ing the seal of Baptism confess Him before men, are the one catholic church.
We believe that disciples of Christ should associate them- selves in distinct bodies,-for their edification and mutual fellowship, for the public worship of God, and the celebra- tion of the Sacraments,-and that every such body of believers is entitled to the name and to all the rights and privileges of a christian church.
We believe that every church is bound to walk in christian charity and communion with all other christian churches, maintaining with them the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Thus you profess and believe.
Holding these truths, and humbly trusting that through the grace of God given unto you, you have consecrated your- selves in heart to His service, you do now, in His sacred presence and publicly before men profess yourselves to be disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. You declare it to be your solemn purpose to lead a life of devotedness to God, to

CONFESSION OF FAITH AND COVENANT.
give yourselves up to His guidance and to strive after con- formity to Ilis holy will; especially will you study to follow the example and the precepts of our blessed Lord ; you will seek by prayer and diligence in duty to secure the aid and sanctifying influence of the Holy Spirit; you will aim to fulfill all the duties, public and private, incumbent on you as. members of the body of Christ; and as members of this church you promise to conform to its order and discipline, to promote as far as in you lies its edification and purity and to walk with your brethren in christian charity and fidelity. Thus you covenant and engage.
And we do affectionately receive you to our communion, and welcome you to a fellowship with us in the blessings of the gospel; and, in the strength of Christ, we do promise to walk with you in all helpfulness, brotherly love, and watch- fulness, as becometh members of the same household of Christ.
Now the God of Peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory forever and ever.
The Lord bless you, and keep you : the Lord make his face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you : the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace. Amen.
