1858 1860 1861 1862 1866 New Haven Addresses in Order
The first New Haven directory to have a numerical section was 1913. This New Haven numerical directory was created from the residents section of the 1858, 1860, 1861, 1862 and 1866 New Haven Directories. These entries have been shortened to 3/4 line or less.
Unnumbered addresses are shown as (Streetname),000 and therefore will not sort to their actual position on the street. Streets are numbered even on one side, odd on the other.
Residents of others towns, (for example: Branford, Fair Haven, Hamden, West Haven) were sometimes listed in the original directories, almost always without any street address. To group these nonresidents together by town, I have added res CT to each out of town address.
Doe, John, laborer emp State,044 h Westville
Doe, John, laborer bds Hamden
Doe, John, laborer res New York City
Become:
res CT, Westville Doe, John laborer emp State,044 h res CT, Hamden Doe, John laborer bds res NY, NYC Doe, John laborer The left arrow < indicates year of origin, and in this example, that all were from New Haven Directories. This allows combining of databases, and identifies source of any particular line. Published numerical directories list one person per surname per address, nothing else. This directory, however, includes every name in the residential section, which means (adult) family groups are displayed together, same surname or not. Alternate surname spellings are now placed together instead of many pages apart. Vital records which include a specific address can now be compared with specific directory addresses.
