S IMSBURY was originally described as "an appendix of Windsor," from which town its early settlers came. It was named and first recognized as a distinct town in 1670. It lies west of Windsor, and as originally constituted was bounded on the east by that town. Suffield, which until 1749 was in the Massachusetts colony, adjoined the two towns on the north.

The section known as "Simsbury north east corner," first settled about 1712, became later the ecclesiastical society or parish of Turkey Hills.

In 1725 the inhabitants of Simsbury took measures toward the erection of a new meeting house. The town being large and divided by a range of high hills and a river with its one large tributary stream, the meeting house could not be so placed as to accommodate all of the inhabitants, and the people were unable to agree upon its location. This was the begin- ning of a controversy which was as long continued and bitter as only an ecclesiastical quarrel of former days could be. The final result after numerous votes and counter votes, decisions and re-decisions, and frequent appeals to the power of the General Assembly, was the division of the town into four socie- ties by the following act passed at the October session of 1736.

Upon the report of Roger Wolcott, James Wadsworth and Thomas Wells, Esqrs, relating to the affair of Symsbury socie- ties with some part of Windsor and Farmington, accepted by this Assembly :

Resolved and enacted by this Assembly, That the inhabitants at the southwest corner of said Windsor, with part of the in- habitants of said Farmington and Symsbury, be, and are hereby made, one distinct society, endowed with parish powers and

privileges as fully as other parishes already by law are allowed ; and the bounds thereof as followeth : Easterly by a line par- allel to Windsor bounds with Simsbury, from Hartford bounds to the south bounds of Paquanuck society, so far east as to take in the house of Peter Mills ; south on Hartford bounds to their northwest corner, then further west till it intersects a south line drawn from the house of Daniel Foot ; then bounded west by a line drawn north from the southwest corner till it takes in the house of Daniel Foot, then to continue northward till it takes in the houses of Timothy Moses, Thomas Addams, Lem- uel Roberts and Richard Roberts, and then the line to extend east to Windsor bounds ; and the remainder bounded by Pa- quanuck society ; and said parish to be known by the name of Wintonbury Parish.

And it is further resolved and enacted, That there be a dis- tinct society at the northwest corner of Symsbury, at the place called Salmon Brook ; and the inhabitants thereof are hereby made one distinct society, and are endowed with parish powers and privileges, as fully as other parishes allowed by law are ; and the bounds of said parish is as followeth : To begin at the mouth of Salmon brook, then bounded east by said brook to the place where the path near Capt. Holcomb's crosseth it, from thence by a line drawn northward to the west side of the great marsh, and so continue to Symsbury north bounds ; bounded north and west at the bounds of Symsbury, bounded south by Saxton's brook, excluding Saxton's lands and the families of Higleys, and from Saxton's brook by a line drawn west north west to Symsbury west bounds.

And it is further resolved and enacted, That there be a so- ciety in the northeast corner of Symsbury, at the place called Turkey Hills ; and the inhabitants thereof are hereby made one distinct society, and are endowed hereby with parish pow- ers and privileges as other parishes already allowed by law have; and is bounded as followeth : Bounded south by the little river, east by Windsor and Suffield bounds, north by Symsbury bounds, west by the lastmentioned society.

And it is further resolved and enacted, That the remaining part of the inhabitants of said Symsbury be one distinct society, endowed with parish powers and privileges as aforesaid.

At the next session, May, 1737, the following additional act

7

was passed, adding to the original limits of the society the section frequently spoken of from its width as "the half mile."

Upon the memorial of Josiah Phelps the second, Josiah Phelps the 4th, Elijah Owen, Samuel Owen, John Thrall, Isaac Gillett, Robert Winchell and Ebenezer Hurlburt, all of Windsor, praying that they with all other inhabitants on the tier of lots in the northwest corner of the town of Windsor, bounded north on Suffield, west on Symsbury, south on the river, and east on the common land in said Windsor, may be annexed to the parish of Turkey Hills, &c., for the reasons assigned, as by their memorial on file : Resolved by this As- sembly, that said memorialists and all the inhabitants on said tier of lots, with the said tier of lots bounded north on Suffield, east on the common and undivided land in said Windsor, and south with the river, be annexed, and the same are hereby an- nexed to, and made part of the society of Turkey Hills.

A portion of Simsbury including Turkey Hills society was incorporated in 1786 as the town of Granby ; and a portion of Windsor including the same society was incorporated in 1854 as the town of Windsor Locks. On June 2, 1858, the town of East Granby was incorporated from portions of Granby and Windsor Locks with practically the same boundaries as those of the Turkey Hills ecclesiastical society.

These records covering the period from the organization of the society in 1737 to 1791, are contained in one unbound vol- ume originally comprising forty-six leaves, eleven and one-half by seven and one-half inches in size. The first leaf is now missing : page 3 contains an index of " Prudential Comtes when Chosen & who," and a number of pages are blank. Several documents taken from the society's files are added by way of appendix.

The volume was found in 1876, after a disappearance of many years, in the garret of the late Deacon Oliver Hayden. Its discovery was due to an inquiry and search instituted at that time by the late Charles Horace Clark, Esq. Its printing is permitted by a vote of the society passed November 12, 1900.
