By 1940 some housing developments were in progress, bringing new people into town. War restrictions stopped work on these, but enough new people had moved in to make some increase in the parish enrollment. Following the war there was a boom in housing projects and the percen- tage of Episcopalians in this influx of new residents brought a big increase to the parish. Many of these new people

86

were transient in the sense that they remained in town only a short time, roughly from one to four years. A brief table will show the effect on the parish:

Mr. Kierstead came to North Haven in the early days of World War II. At first this had little effect on paroch- ial work. There was soon a change in this situation. The constant call for men to serve in the armed services, be- came a steady drain on the parish. The 19-39ers lost so many active members that the organization ceased to ex- ist. Then restrictions began to take effect. Restrictions on gasoline caused difficulties in transportation; on fuel oil necessitated fewer meetings, and lowered temperatures at the meetings and services held; on building materials resulted in delays in making needed repairs; on flour and other foods lowered both quality and quantity of the supply for sales and suppers.

It was a difficult time for both rector and parish. In times of fear, anxiety, and stress there is a tendency for people to turn to God for help and strength. As the ten- sions of the times brought this to pass in St. John's, the religious feeling became more vital, filled with a deeper significance. This perhaps accounted for the progress made in the field of week day religious education, and for the organization of the Altar Guild in 1945.

In 1948 a group of young women formed an organiza- tion called the Junior Women. Some members of this new venture were from outside the parish. They assisted in parish work and their annual project was a Valentine card party which was very successful. After a few years withdraw- al of non-parochial members, the transfer of others to the Evening Guild and the departure of some to other localities so weakened the group that the remainder voted to disband.

87

Following the war it became possible to take care of repair work, and to begin plans for the future. The parish house was definitely inadequate, and when in 1947 the par - ish received a $10,000. bequest from the estate of Celia Mansfield, it was voted that this should be set aside as the start of a Parish House Expansion Fund.

At the annual meeting in 1950 a planning committee was authorized to consider the parish house situation and report to a parish meeting. Before this committee could organize and start work, the rector received a call from a larger parish, and at a special meeting held on March 26th, 1950, his resignation from St. John's was presented. The resignation was accepted, and a committee appointed to look for a new rector.

During Mr. Kierstead's rectorship his salary had been gradually increased to $3300. During the same period the parish had also gradually assumed responsibility for heat and all utilities. This provided the basis for the action of the special parish meeting that voted to extend a call to The Rev. A. Rees Hay to become the next rector of St.John's at a salary of $3300. per year, plus the use of the rectory with heat and all utilities. To complete the record regard- ing the rector's salary, it was increased annually, begin- ning in 1953, until it reached the sum of $5000. To this was added a car allowance of $500.

In 1951 the question of an addition to the parish house was again considered. Some immediate action seemed necessary, both because of need, and because the Korean situation appeared to indicate the restoration of restric- tions on numerous items. Plans were made and adopted, construction started, and in 1952 the addition was dedicated.

During this period (1950-57) St. John's received an increasing amount of assistance from Berkeley students, one of whom, Robert D. Terhune, Jr. , was a member of St. John's, and one of the two St. John's men to enter the min- istry during the past fifty years. The other member is The Rev. Percy Linwood Urban, Jr.

World War II (a truly global conflict) and the Korean War, supplemented by fast air transportation, and almost instantaneous radio communication, had proved that the

88

United States was no longer an isolated nation. In a sim- ilar, but much smaller way, St. John's was no longer a small isolated country parish, but a neighbor to parishes all over the world. This was startlingly demonstrated when the appeal for aid for Hungarian refugees, created by the student revolt against Russian oppression, was re- ceived. The Rev. Mr. Hay has kindly given us a report of facts taken from his personal records. Unfortunately we do not have space for his entire article, but we quote the essential facts.

"The Rector of St. John's read a telegram received from the Acting Governor of Connecticut asking that chur- ches throughout the state sponsor a Hungarian family. Lit- tle did anyone realize the far reaching consequence of the offering made that Sunday morning. It began with an amount of $1200. but it was to end in over $5000. and involved St. John's Parish in a resettlement program which was to receive national recognition. It was not just that St. John's provided for thirty Hungarians, took them into their homes as members of their families, but St. John's was involved in the whole Hungarian program. Most significant was the school run by the students and faculty of Yale University in St. John's Parish House, where for months the Hungar- ian Refugees in the New Haven area, as well as those in the parish, came to learn English. It made no difference that these educators were not Episcopalians, it was a Christian cause.

"Each of the thirty refugees taken in by St. John's Parish was provided, not just the necessary clothes and money, but they were taken in by a family who were to act as their own family in this country. This concern and love still continues, even though each Hungarian is well settled in college or in a job. It would be impossible to list all who served so faithfully.

"St. John's is proud to have had this part in what Vice President Nixon called, 'One of the most significant events in the history of mankind'. "

In 1956 plans were devised for remodeling and ex- panding the physical plant, the first stage being the inter- ior of the church. The following major changes have been

89

accomplished: the wooden floor was removed and replaced by a solid floor to allow for the installation of radiant heat; new pews were installed; the gallery was removed; the two original doors between nave and vestibule were blocked up and replaced by a center and two side doors. In the vesti- bule the gallery stairs were removed and the doorway blocked up; the cloak room and the janitor's closet were removed; and the original heavy doors were discarded and replaced with lighter, modern ones.

In the fall of 1958 a magazine published an article which, in brief, spoke of how Americans traveled to Eur- ope to see and enthuse over their old buildings, and then returning home destroyed or modernized America's old buildings. It has been so with St. John's. The steeple was changed to accommodate the bell in 1851, with subsequent minor changes since. The high pulpit was destroyed and the east wall altered to install a recessed chancel in 1859. In 1869 a larger recess chancel and an organ chamber were added, and the old pews with the little doors were removed to make way for a more modern type. In 1928 the Sanctuary was made possible by extending a part of the east wall, and finally the recent changes. In 1959 little remains of the original building but the west wall and part of both the north and south walls.

On June 2nd, 1957 The Rev. Mr. Hay presented his res- ignation, to become effective July 1st. The parish accepted the resignation, and elected a committee to search for a new rector. The search covered most of Connecticut and spread out into several other states. It resulted in a re- port to a special parish meeting on October 17th 1957, recommending the calling of The Rev. Joseph Trexler Ur- ban to be the next rector of St. John's. The parish accepted the report and voted to extend a call to the Rev. Mr. Urban. He accepted the call and came to North Haven in time to begin his rectorship by officiating at the services on Sun- day, December 8th, 1957. During 1958 he has become well established in the parish, which in January 1959, is looking forward to his presiding over the celebration of its two hundredth anniversary.

God has been good to St. John's Parish. The high hopes

90

of the founders have been realized beyond their greatest expectations. Future history will continue to have the progress and spiritual growth recorded in glowing terms in His name.

Note. The early records lead to much confusion regarding the title of clerk. There are notations indicating a parish clerk, a prudential committee clerk, and a reading clerk. In addition there is the title of assistant clerk. At times the records show more than one clerk serv- ing over a designated period, without showing the specific duties of each. We have tried to list them in their proper categories, but a per centage of error is almost certain, and we can only guarantee that the names listed are on record as having served as clerk or assistant clerk in some one of the three capacities.

The annual election of the parish tax collector and the executive members of the prudential committee originated in 1784. The office of tax collector was abolished in 1837 when the parish had decided to discontinue the effort to finance by taxation. The prudential commit- tee ceased to exist when the parish returned to the Episcopal system of wardens and vestry in 1841.
