Health Officer's Report.

As Town Health Officer I would respectfully report, as the law requires, for the year ending August 31, 1903, as follows :

During the year there were no known cases of measles, whooping cough, cerebro-spinal fever, or smallpox. There occurred during the year seven probable cases of diphtheria and two of membranous cronp. The diphtheria cases were all in or near Turnerville. Six of the cases developed the latter part of September and one in the early part of December. The first case of membranous croup developed near the first of October in the same family as the first six cases of diphtheria. The occurrence of this case led to the discovery of the cases of diphtheria preceding it, and to which it seemed to be secondary. These diphtheria cases were all of a mild grade; no physician had been in attendance and, of course, had not been reported. Diphtheria anti- toxin was used in the case of membranous cronp, with the recovery of the patient within a few days. The second case of membranous croup. developed near the first of December in the family of George A. Little,. the patient dying after about three days. Anti-toxin was used in this case also, but, it would seem, not soon enough for it to have a curative effect. The families in which the above cases occurred were quaren -. tined, the premises subsequently disinfected, and there were no known additional cases. The origin of the cases of diphtheria and croup was. not ascertained.

Of typhoid fever there was only one case, so far as known. This. was in the Second School District, in the family of Roswell K. Jones, developing early in August of the present year, contracted apparently

at Crescent Beach. The case was severe and protracted, with the patient now convalescing.

During the month of August notice was sent to the committees in the several school districts to clean up and put the school rooms and outbuildings in good sanitary condition before the opening of the fall term of school. The school premises were subsequently inspected and found, in nearly all cases, in satisfactory condition. The remaining school premises were later found in a condition at least not deemed prejudicial to the public health.

Respectfully submitted,

CYRUS H. PENDLETON, M. D.,

Town Health Officer.
