At a church meeting held Jan. 23d, 1766, and at several subsequent meetings there were under consideration a disagreement between Asah Ward and Samuel Wheeler which are of interest only as showing the au- thority of the church at that time. OXFORD HISTORY.

" All which is apprehended to be a direct and scandelous breach of ye 9th Commandment, and highly prejudicial to Truth and Justice. And fur- thermore is yt criminal slandring and Backbiting, and evil-speaking which is expressly, and repeatedly forbiden in God's Holy Word, and so is highly dis- honourable to God, and justly Matter of Offence to all ye People of God. That ye Complainant being justly grieved, and offended, did according to ye . Direction of our Lord Jesus Christ, in such case provided, go to ye sd Sam11 Wheler, and betwene him and himself alone told him his Fault, but he re- fusing to hear him, sd Complainant proceeded according to ye above men- tioned Direction, to take two of ye Brethren of sd Chh, and did with them go again and tell him his Fault, but without ye desired effect, and to his grief. And now according to Christs Rule he finds himself obliged to tell ye Matter, as he now does to the Chh hoping his offending Brother, who has refused to hear him or ye Brethren with him will hear ye Chh, wherefore ye sd Com- plainant desires his Revª Pastor, and Brethren in Christ, to take Cog- nissance of the sd Matter, and Hear, Judge, Weigh, and determine sd Cause on hearing ye Evidence sd Complainant has in Readiness to produce in sup- port of ye Charge, brought in this Complaint, when called thereto.

Dated in Oxford Septr 25th 1765. Asah Ward.

Joseph Osborn, Ensign Thomas Clark and Mr. Samuel Wooster were appointed to confer with Wheeler and Ward and endeavor to effect a reconciliation. These dignitaries being unsuccessful a meeting was held Jan. 30th, 1766.

" Upon Consideration of the Facts, and hearing ye Evidences in sd Case, it was 1st Determined by the Chh, that, the Declaration of sd Sam" Wheler was not in Peremptory Terms, but by way of Oppinion .- 2dly tryed by Vote wheather a Confession exhibited by sd Sam" Wheler, some Time Since to sd Asah Ward was a Sufficient Confession, sd Vote passed in the Negative. 3ly Voted that sd Sam" Wheler should exhibit a publick Confession. 4thly Vot- ed that Deacon John Lumm, and Capt Zechariah Hawkings, should go ont with ine in order to assist in drawing up a confession which was in ye words following (viz:) "I Samuel Wheler, acknowledge, that Some Time in March 1765, I did openly utter Some Expressions (as my Opinion) against Asah Ward, a member of this Chh, Contrary to the Rules of Gods Word, whereby I have grieved him and this Chh, for which I am heartily Sorry, and ask his Forgivness, and the Forgivness of all Gods People for me, promiss- ing by divine grace assisting me wherein I have offended to do so no more.
