Zebulon Reed Brockway was born at the romantic Brock- way's Ferry, Lyme, Conn., April 28th, 1827; and came with his parents to Hadlyme in 1836, where he spent the remaining years of his boyhood and early manhood. His prison service covers half a century. Beginning at the age of 21 at Wethers- field, he served as guard and clerk; assistant superintendent at Albany ; as superintendent at Rochester and Detroit; acting in this same capacity in the New York State Reformatory at Elmira from the opening of this institution in 1876 to 1900. His foresight and untiring labors have enlarged the educa- tional and industrial advantages of prison life. The establish- ment of the New York State Reformatory (the first one in the United States) was largely the result of his advanced ideals and benevolent service. He is regarded as a penologist of national and world-wide reputation.
Rev. Quillen H. Shinn said of him and his work, after meeting him personally and attending several of the National Prison Congresses, "He is the greatest reformer of the age; to look at him is a benediction."
THOMAS M. WILLEY, 12 West Point Military Academy, 1868.
