GENERAL STATE HOSPITAL SOCIETY.
This Society was chartered in May, 1826, and an appropriation of $5,000 was made by the State to aid in carrying out its objects. Handsome sums have been con- tributed by individuals in different parts of the State, and the Medical Institution of Yale College pays a yearly stipend. Its building, which was finished in 1832, is situate at the head of Broad street, between Congress and Davenport Avenues. It consists of a center and two wings, whole length 130 feet ; breadth in the center, 48 feet. There are about twenty rooms besides those in the basement, and a large room in the attic for operations. The building is of stone and stuccoed on the outside. In front of the center are four columns, constructed after Grecian models.

LITERARY INSTITUTIONS.
YALE COLLEGE .- This institution was founded in 1700 -and from that period to 1840, the number of graduates will not vary much from 5,000, or an avarage of about 37 per annum. There are at present 564 young men in this seminary. Commencement, 3d Wednesday in August. Vacations, from Commencement, six weeks ; in January, two weeks; in May, four weeks.
HOPKINS GRAMMAR SCHOOL .- This school was found- ed in 1654, by Edward Hopkins, Esq., who was for some time governor of Connecticut, and who died in London in 1687. Its concerns are managed by seven trustees, who are styled the "Committee of the Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven." This committee is at present composed of Benjamin Silliman, James L. Kingsley, Sam- uel J. Hitchcock, Chauncey A. Goodrich, Roger S. Bald- win, Henry White and Wyllys Warner. Hawley Olm- stead, A. M., Preceptor. Wyllys Warner, Secretary and Treasurer. The school is now kept in the new building, erected during the last year, on the corner of High and Wall streets.
COLLEGIATE AND COMMERCIAL SCHOOL AT WOOSTER PLACE .- This is a select boarding school for boys, con- ducted by Messrs. Stiles and Truman French, and was es- tablished by them in its present location in October, 1834. Its plan of instruction, according to its prospectus, embra- ces, after a careful course in elementary English branches, a thorough preparation either for admission to college, or for commercial business.

This Society, formerly known as the "Young Mechanics Institute," has, during the past year, under its new name and organization, in- creased its library to nearly four thousand volumes; established a well furnished reading room, consisting of about forty newspapers, and twenty monthly and quarterly periodicals. A course of weekly lectures is given before the members, during the winter. The institution was incorporated at the last session of the Legislature. The utility of this Institution, and the small tax incurred by its members, ought to induce every member of the community to support it. The terms are
For all persons under 18 years of age, 2 00. Between 18 and 20 years of age, 300. Over 21 years of age, 4 00.
Arrangements are making to locate it at Saunders' Hall, 51 Orange street.
