This increasing tolerance is indicative of the fact that convictions are held with less tenacity than was formerly true. Many adult Christians of our so-called liberal churches are not quite sure what they believe. Usually they have had a few years in Sunday School during their youth and have attended church with a certain amount of regularity. Yet they are vague about their Christian convictions, whether
224
THE CHURCH ON THE GREEN
such convictions be a matter of theology or of personal con- duct. Sunday activities have become a matter of the per- sonal conscience rather than of church dictum and many consciences are flexible. The substance, of Christian faith has become, for many, rather thin. People tend to be more easygoing and to be rather uncertain just where they are going. The situation is somewhat like the flippant remark often heard among young people, "We don't know where we're going but we're on our way."
Then what of the future? Have the preceding paragraphs appeared pessimistic ? I did not intend to have them so. Will our church membership during the next few decades wax or wane? Will our church go on from strength to strength or will it merely reflect a glory that is gone, slowly losing its spiritual vitality ? Such questions are not easy of answer and prophecy at best is a questionable procedure.
In an effort to answer the above query it might be said that each church is largely dependent upon the community situation in which it is placed. The members are the church and this will remain true in the years that lie ahead. If Washington is to be a growing community, that fact will immediately register in the life of the church. If the opposite is to be true, that also will directly affect the fortunes of the First Congregational Church. This church has been and is today dependent upon voluntary contributions in order to carry out its program. Lacking a substantial endowment, this situation will remain.
In addition to this obvious truth, there are the danger signals which have already been mentioned. Far too many people are casual about their church responsibilities. They are not in dead earnest. If such a trend were to continue or if it were to be enhanced, then the result might well be
225
LOOKING FORWARD
ominous for the churches of Washington as well as of the nation in the years that lie ahead.
On the other hand, it may be said with equal truth that as the church goes so will go the nation. Above it was stated that as the community goes, so will go the church. The oppo- site is equally true. In the present crisis and world conflict it has been discovered that the last freedom to be lost has been religious freedom. Other freedoms disappeared first. People in Europe have learned that when they no longer possessed religious liberty, they were without any liberty. Europe has demonstrated to our world that the freedom of conscience is fundamental and that every other freedom is dependent upon it, such as racial, economic and political freedom. The state may give freedom to the church as in the Constitution of the United States. But that famous docu- ment happened to be drawn up by men who were brought up to believe in the freedom of the conscience.
As the people of our country increasingly realize the full import of this truth, I believe that they will turn to the church as the inspirational fount of all their liberties. They will cherish it as the guardian of the faith of their fathers. They will realize as never before the precious nature of their freedoms and of the sacrifices of New England ancestors on behalf of such freedoms. They will know without equivoca- tion that the Christian church has been largely instrumental in giving to the American people their way of life and that if the health or vigor of the church is endangered then the American way of life may well pass from the scene.
Moreover it is my belief that man's supreme confidence in himself and in his own worth has had rude jolts in recent years. The note of optimism regarding the inevitableness of evolution is less in evidence. Human sin in all its ruthless

THE CHURCH ON THE GREEN
and destructive manifestations has caused thoughtful people to reconsider their sense of values. Man's depend- ence upon God and his need of God and his inability to build a wholesome world without God's help are becoming self- evident. It would seem as though the present trend had almost run its course and that it must be followed by a new sense of dependence upon a higher power. As a religion, im- personal science has demonstrated its limitations. As a religion, materialism has proven its bankruptcy.
Hence I look forward with confidence to the century that lies ahead and to the place that this church will occupy in the life of this community. I believe that the First Congrega- tional Church of Washington will continue to stand for the higher values as it has done in the past. It will help to bring God into the experience of its members and to inspire them to serve the church in a spirit of joy and sacrifice. It will continue to take its place in the larger program of pro- claiming Christ to the world at large, associated with other churches in that effort. As in the past, so in the future, it will continue to make its primary task the building of God's kingdom upon earth. We would, therefore, go forward in faith, seeking God's guidance and relying upon His strength. We would be true to the faith of our fathers.
