Governor for the time being, under the seal of the State. This provision was adopted in the constitution in 1818, but was changed by an amendment adopted in 1850, by which justices of the peace are to be appointed by the electors of the several towns. The statute of 1851 provides that they shall be appointed for two years.

SELECTMEN.


TOWNS were authorized by the act of 1672 "to choose a convenient number not exceeding seven of their inhabitants, able, discreet and of good conversation, to be selectmen or townsmen, to take care of and order the prudential affairs of their town." By the constitution of the State adopted in 1818, it is made " the duty of each town to elect annually selectmen and such officers of local police as the laws may prescribe."


By the provision of the statutes of 1821, towns were annu- . ally to choose and appoint a convenient number, not exceed- ing seven, to be selectmen, and by the statute of 1852 they are to be chosen by ballot.


The first selectmen chosen in the town of Tolland were chosen in the year 1717. The following named persons have held the office of selectmen in the town of Tolland, during the year prefixed to the names of each respectively :
