On OUR Party Line We allow a little time between calls

OUR PARTY LINE! IS WHAT WE'VE MADE IT

"There's a trick to calling a long list of people without monop. olizing a party line. This is the way that works out best on our. line .. . and we have a lot of telephoning to do for our various clubs and organizatione." -

. We don't try to call the whole list at ons. sitting.

. A few calls, then a few minutes wait to give someone else a chance to call in or out."

We keep our conversations short.

We avoid starting in on a list during the O ... early part of the evening when our line is usually busiest.

Give A Fellow TIME to ANSWER

A telephone ring is exciting! You never know what's waiting at the other end. That's why it's important to answer calls promptly. It's also important when you're doing the calling, to allow time for your party to reach the telephone. It's two-way telephone consideration that means better service all around.

How to Place Out-of-Town Calls

There are two general classes of Out-of-Town Calls, namely Station-to-Station and Person- to-Person, as explained below.

Station-to-Station Calls (From One Telephone to Another)

A station-to-station call is one when you ask to be connected with a certain telephone in a distant place. However, if you ask for a par- ticular person or for an extension telephone reached through a private branch exchange, as one in some department or hotel room, the call is a person-to-person call. A station-to-station call is completed more quickly and the rate is less than for a person-to-person call.

The time at the originating point when the . conversation starts determines whether the day or night rate applies. Charges begin when the called telephone is answered provided the call- ing party is holding the line.

To Place a Station-to-Station Call

First-Give the operator the name of the place you are calling.

Second+-The telephone number you are call- ing (if known), otherwise, the name and the address (if known) of the party whose tele- phone you are calling. For example: J./ W. Brown's Residence-425 Main Street.

Third-Your telephone number when the oper -. ator asks for it.

Person-to-Person Calls (From One Person to Another)

A person-to-person call is one when you ask for a particular person or extension telephone reached through a private branch exchange, as. one in some department or hotel room. The rate for a person-to-person call is higher than; the rate for a station-to-station call.

The time at the originating point. when the conversation starts determines whether the day or night rate applies. The initial period is three minutes, after which charges for additional time apply. Charges begin when the called person or extension telephone reached through a private branch exchange is obtained, pro- vided the calling party is holding the line Charges may be reversed without any change in rate.

- 2 .-

To Place a Person-to-Person Call . First-Give the operator the name of the place you are calling.

Second-The name and telephone number (if known) of the person you are calling, other- wise, the name and the address (if known) of the called party. For example: Mr. J. W. Brown, at telephone 2470, or Mr. J. W. Brown, at J. W. Brown's residence-425 Main Street. Third-Your telephone number when the oper- ator asks for it.

Charges for Initial Period, Overtime and Federal Taxes

Further information concerning charges for initial period, overtime, and Federal taxes may be obtained by calling Long Distance.

Collect Calls

If the charges on the call are to be paid at the distant telephone, you should tell the oper- ator when filing the call that it is a "collect" call. The charges, if accepted at the distant telephone, will be billed to that telephone.

General Information Tariffs

Tariffs which show rates, rules and regula- tions for telephone service and facilities are on fille with the Regulatory Commissions having jurisdiction over such matters, and are avail- able for public inspection at our business office.

Transmitting Messages

Employes of the Telephone Company are for- bidden to accept oral or written messages to be transmitted by an employe over the lines of the Telephone Company.

Attachments to Telephones

To render satisfactory service, it is important that the Telephone Company furnish and main- tain all apparatus and ermipment connected with its lines. Except as provided in the Tariffs, no line, instrument, appliance or apparatus not furnished by the Telephone Company shall be connected with, attached to or in any way used in connection with facilities of the Telephone Company.

Recording of Telephone Conversations

A short "beep" tone heard over the telephone about every 15 seconds indicates that the person with whom you are talking is recording your conversation by means of his electrical record- ing machine connected to the line. The "beep" signal is produced automatically by a device which connects the recorder to the telephone line and which is provided by the Telephone Company for your protection.

Use of a recorder without this signal is un-' lawful. If you do not want a record made of what you are saying, ask the person with whom you are talking to disconnect his recording, machine. When he disconnects his recorder, the signal is no longer heard.

Advertising Telephone Numbers

The advantages of showing telephone num- bers on stationery, signs, cards, etc., are recog- nized, though the growth and changes in the city and the corresponding growth and arrange- ment of Telephone facilities may require the changing of telephone numbers. For this rea- son, stationery, signs, cards, etc., showing tele- phone numbers should not be printed in large quantities.

Telegrams by Telephone You may telephone telegrams, cablegrams or radiograms to the Western Union Telegraph Co., and have the charges billed to your tele- phone account if you are a telephone sub- scriber. Just follow the instructions shown un- der the listing of this company in the direc- tory.

"Architects' and Builders' Service

When building or remodeling, you may ar- range with your architect or builder to provide telephone outlets while construction is in prog- ress. The Telephone Company will gladly ad- vise with you, your architect or builder. Just call the Telephone Company and ask for "Ar- chitects' and Builders' Service."

Calls from a Party Line Where a Crank Is Used to Ring the Operator

Before ringing the Operator, remove the re- ceiver and listen to make sure the line is not in use. To get the Operator, replace the re- ceiver and turn the crank. When through talk- ing, promptly hang up the receiver and turn the crank again so the Operator will clear your line for further use.

Telephone Directories

Loss of time and inconvenience by calling wrong numbers can be avoided if you consult the current directory before placing a call and avoid the use of obsolete directories.

Between directory issues certain numbers do not appear in the current directory due to changes and new installations. These numbers may be secured by calling "Information."

No binder, holder or auxiliary cover, except those furnished by the Company, shall be used in connection with any telephone directory.

Telephone directories of other cities in this and certain foreign countries can be obtained for our customers who need them. Prices, etc .; may be secured by calling the business office.

How to Use the Dial Telephone In Archer, Cross City, Gainesville, Hawthorne, Keystone Heights, Micanopy, Newberry and Trenton

Remove the receiver carefully from the hook and listen for the dial tone which is a steady humming sound indicating that the line is ready for you to dial.

How to Dial a Number

When you hear the dial tone, dial each. 32 figure in the tele- 4 phone number you wish to call as fol- 5 lows - Place your finger in the opening over the first figure 6 of the number, turn the dial around until your finger strikes the finger stop, then 8 remove your finger and, without touching the dial, allow it to return to its normal position. Proceed in the same way to dial the other figures in the number, If your finger slips, or you make a mistake, hang up the receiver, wait a few seconds for the dial tone and dial again.

Before dialing a second call, always hang up the receiver for a few seconds to clear the line.

Ringing and Busy Signals

A few seconds after you have completed dial- ing, you should hear either the ringing signal, an intermittent burr-rr-ing sound, indicating that the bell of the called telephone is ringing, or you should hear the busy signal, a buzz- buzz-buzz, indicating that the called line is busy. If the called telephone is busy, you should hang up your receiver and try the call again later.

If you do not hear either the ringing signal or the busy signal within half a minute, hang up your receiver for a few seconds and then try the call again.

Dial "Operator" for Assistance

If at any time you wish further information regarding the procedure to follow in making calls of any kind, dial "Operator" and ask her for the information desired.

If you fail to hear the ringing signal or busy signal after repeated attempts to reach a num- ber, or if you have any other difficulty in com- pleting a call, dial "Operator" and report the condition to her.

Coin Box Telephones

Instructions for operating coin box telephones are mounted on each coin box station.

Calls from a Party Line or from a Line With an Extension Telephone

Listen to make sure that the line is not in use. If you do not hear the dial tone, ask if the line is being used. If no response is received, hang up the receiver and then try again.

However, if you hear successive clicks, indi- cating that someone is dialing, wait until the clialing stops and then say that you have inter- fered with the call, that it will be necessary to hang up and dial the complete number again. Then replace your receiver on the hook.

If you hear another party on your line dur- ing or after dialing, say that the line is in use and request him to hang up his receiver. If the other party comes in on the line while you are dialing, after he hangs up, you should also hang up for a few seconds and then dial the com- plete number again.

To Dial Another Party on Your Line GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

If you are a party line subscriber and wish to call another party on your line, it will be necessary to follow the instructions outlined below for your particular exchange.

After you have finished dialing the code num- ber, or the listed number, as appropriate, hang up your receiver, Your bell, as well as the bell of the party you are calling, will ring at brief intervals. When the called party answers, your bell will stop ringing. You should then lift your receiver to talk with the party answering. If your bell does not stop ringing in from one to two minutes, it indicates that there is no one within hearing distance to answer the called telephone. You should then stop your bell from ringing and free your line from the connection by removing your receiver from the hook for a few seconds.

GAINESVILLE SUBSCRIBERS-

If you are on a party line and wish to call another party on your line, it will be neces- sary to dial a special code number instead of the regular number of the subscriber as listed in the directory.

1. Two-Party Subscribers-To call the other party on your line dial the code "1191".

2. Four-Party or Rural Subscribers - You may obtain the code for calling another party on your line by dialing "114" (Re- pair Service). Give her your telephone number and also the number of the party you wish to call. You will be given the proper code number to dial.

ARCHER, CROSS CITY, HAWTHORNE, KEY- STONE HEIGHTS, MICANOPY, NEWBERRY AND TRENTON SUBSCRIBERS-

To reach another party on your line, dial the regular number of the other party as listed in the telephone directory. After you have fin- ished dialing, you will hear the "busy" signal and should then hang up your receiver, and proceed as described under general instructions above.

You may recognize other parties on your line by the similarity of the telephone numbers, since the first three figures in the numbers of all parties on the same line are alike.

To Secure Names of Other Parties on Your Line

If you wish to know the names of the other parties on your line, you may obtain this in- formation by dialing "Operator".
