St. Petersburg, Fla.
St. Petersburg is situated on the southernmost point of the Pinellas Peninsula (or Pinellas County), 270 miles south from Jack- sonville, Florida.
The town is beautifully situated on a gentle slope rising forty feet above the level of the Bay, and extends backward in the form of a parallelogram. The streets run east and west and north and south and intersect at right angles. Recently the city has annexed also a strip of land one mile wide and extending westward over five miles through the originally planned city and this "handle," Central Ave- nue, which divides the city into north and south, sweeps west from Tampa Bay, a magnificent boulevard seven miles long, straight as an arrow, to Boca Ceiga Bay on the west. When the improvements of parking and planting of trees and shrubs along the line of this ex- tension are completed, Central Avenue will be one of the famous "show" streets of America. To the south a large area of partially overflowed land has been reclaimed, and hundreds of valuable city lots form the subdivision of Bayboro, where formerly were only tiny bayous and sand flats.
More even than other sections of the State, is St. Petersburg and the Pinellas Peninsula favored in the matter of climate. This, its greatest attraction, is due to its practically insular position. Summer and winter the climate is ideal. Sea breezes render the summers de- lightful, and in winter the warm winds from Gulf and Bay temper to a caress the touch of winter.
Fogs are infrequent and the absence of swamps and marshes leave no room for malaria. St. Petersburg has more clear, bright days than any city in the country, and this, far from being an un- founded boast, is a well-established fact.
Fanned by soft winds which blow from Gulf and Bay, tempering the warmth of summer and banishing winter's chill; with nights cool and pleasant for sweet, refreshing sleep; with almost every day an "out-doors" day ; and with the purest artesian water for drinking, it is no wonder this physical well-being rises to the highest mark in St. Petersburg. The city has an excellent system of sanitation, health rules are rigidly enforced, and streets, alleys and grounds are kept in an admirably neat and clean condition.
Among the chief charms of St. Petersburg are the beautiful walks and drives. The eye is delighted with a symphony of colors. In the unique climate of the Peninsula are grown in perfection not only plants and trees of the temperate zone, but those of the tropics as well. Mangoes and avocado pears, guavas and papayas or "paw- paws," bananas and pineapples mingle with the commoner citrus fruit trees, such as orange, grapefruit, lime and lemon. Tall palms grow here and the magnolia, of glossy leaf and immense fragrant, creamy blossoms, with oaks and many evergreens. Some of the vines are perfect curtains of glowing colors-the purple bougain-

villea, the orange and red bignonia and trumpet flower, the white and yellow jasmine and the golden allemander. Hibiscus and poin- ciana, many hued oleanders, rubber trees, and cacti are seen in per- fection. Roses bloom all the year, and in the spring the perfume of orange blossoms is everywhere.
On the Pinellas Peninsula vegetables of every description may be grown, together with melons, berries, grapes, sugar-cane, rice, and various forage crops, such as pea vines, bermuda grass, beggar weed, and velvet beans. Owing to its immunity from killing frosts, Pinellas is one of the finest citrus sections of the State. Its grape- fruit, especially, are of the finest quality and most delicious flavor. Many tropical fruits may be grown successfully.
For poultry raising there is no better country in the world, and bee culture is profitable.
The soil is for the most part a light, sandy loam, very easily cul- tivated, with occasional tracts of rich, black, wet muck land, which, when well drained, is the finest of soil for vegetables. Then there are stretches, here and there, of what is called scrub pine land, gener- ally regarded as practically worthless for farming purposes.
Government by commission was adopted by the city in 1913. The governing board consists of a Mayor and seven commissioners.
Police and fire departments are well organized and efficient. The city hospital, the park system, and the municipal library and advertising department are each in charge of a board of commis- sioners appointed for these purposes. The water supply of St. Petersburg is from never-failing artesian wells, pure and palatable. The city owns its water-works. The latest addition to St. Peters- burg's city-owned public utilities is an up-to-date gas plant, which furnishes consumers light and fuel at a low figure.
St. Petersburg's banks, all with handsome brick or stone build- ings ; business houses costing from $50,000 to $100,000, with large modern stocks; its trolley, electric light, and telephone systems, all substantiate its claim to all city conveniences. In the city are gar- ages ; woodworking plants; ice and cold-storage plants ; machine shops and marine ways; fruit, vegetable, and fish-packing houses; wholesale grocery, grain and fertilizers, large cement and concrete plants, tobacco factory, and shops of all descriptions.
Although St. Petersburg is splendidly equipped for entertain- ing, the demand for the very best in accommodations grows, and provisions for fulfilling this demand will be made.
The numerous hotels, boarding-houses, rooming houses, apart- ment houses, and cottages, with cafes and restaurants, furnish accom- dations to suit every taste and pocketbook.
City and suburban residents take much pride in their homes. The streets are lined with beautiful dwellings in a setting of finely kept lawns and tropical shrubs and vines. Many of the handsomest homes are seen on country estates.
St. Petersburg is a religious community, as its numerous hand- some church edifices show. An attractive brick and stone public library building has been constructed upon an admirable park site, fronting a clear blue lake, about the center of the town.
Among the more conspicuous fraternal orders represented are the Masons, Elks, Odd Fellows, Red Men, Knights of Pythias, Woodmen of the World, with their auxiliary women's orders.

St. Petersburg's public schools are its pride. The buildings of the city school system are eight in number, modern and thoroughly equipped. Funds have recently been provided for a new high school to cost $175,000. The course of study is comprehensive and practi- cal, covering from kindergarten through the high school and includ- ing, besides the subjects usually taught, domestic science, physical culture, military drill and manual training. All school privileges are free to children of visitors. Besides the public schools there are a number of excellent private schools and a business college.
St. Petersburg is an automobile town. The 100-foot wide streets, paved with vitrified brick, and the hard-surfaced country roads arouse the enthusiasm of visiting motorists. Pinellas County this summer completes a system of highways at an expense of $715,- 000. Every town and village in the county has a good brick road leading to it. St. Petersburg is also one of the best sidewalk towns in the country, having over 100 miles of good cement walks in the city and adjacent subdivisions.
Much of the fame of St. Petersburg rests upon the reputation of the prowess of her fishermen, the actual catches of Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, grouper, trout, snapper, and many other edible fishes being so large as to be almost unbe- lievable to those unacquainted with the facts. Great sport is had also in crabbing and catching the enormous jewfish. Fishing is good all the year and may be enjoyed from shore, pier, or boat-in the shallow waters near shore or in deep water several miles out. The great "silver king" or leaping tarpon comes into the waters around the keys late in the spring, and until the end of summer, fishermen from near and far are out with hook and tackle to capture the silver beauties-from 75 to 200 pounds in weight.
St. Petersburg is wonderfully attractive to the seekers for amuse- ment, pleasure, and recreation. Boating, bathing, fishing, shelling, motoring, picnicking, and all out-door pleasures may be enjoyed about 360 days in the year. There are fine fresh fruits and vege- tables all winter long, and the most delicious of sea food to satisfy the taste of the epicure. The opera-house, costing $125,000 and seating 2,500 people, would be a credit to a city twenty times the size of St. Petersburg.
Many visitors are found in the free library and occupying the seats conveniently distributed along the streets and in the parks. Hundreds of elderly tourists have formed themselves into a "Sun- shine Pleasure Club," and assemble in Williams' Park every week- day to play checkers, croquet, and quoits. On Sunday afternoons the park is filled to overflowing when the band gives a sacred con- cert. A free mid-week concert is also given. A Chautauqua is held in the spring and lyceum courses are frequently given.
Golf is played all the year round. . The eighteen-hole course on the trolley line at Davista is one of the finest in the whole country. Grass greens distance, 6,080 yards ; bogey, 82; par, 72. Tourna- ments held all winter. There is a golf expert and two assistants. The handsome club house is admirably fitted up for the comfort, con- venience and pleasure of players and guests of the club.
Cities, like persons, have individuality, and St. Petersburg's is

clear-cut and unique. Whatever the town may be called it is not colorless or neutral-the earnestness of its citizens may not be gain- said. They are known, locally and abroad, for their foresight, en- ergy, and enterprise, and particularly for their harmonious united efforts to advance the common good. And the characteristic of the townspeople most remarked of all, is their whole-souled friendliness and unaffected courtesy to strangers.
The city has wisely acquired for the public its magnificent water front. It has taken steps to improve its commercial harbor, a factor in the material growth of the city well worth the study, not only of the municipality, but of investors and manufacturers looking for strategic positions. This harbor has such a multitude of possibilities as to make St. Petersburg's situation of extraordinary value as a shipping point.
The enterprise of the city in undertaking its park extension system, and the conception and adoption of such a plan for a great recreation center as its "Concordium," on the water front, have at- tracted wide notice and commendation.
THE BOARD OF TRADE
The St. Petersburg Board of Trade is a live body of progressive men (and women, too), all eager to build up, not only their own interests but those of the town which they call home.
