PREFACE

The eighteenth annual edition of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Tampa City Directory, herewith presented, is issued with the assurance that all of the varied informa- tion desirable in a modern, first-class directory of a growing city is given with specific accuracy and that it is everything which the best skill in directory making has been able to produce.

The actual worth of the City Directory is becoming more and more gen- erally understood every year. Its value as a book of reference and as a guide to all the residences and business houses, streets, public buildings, churches, schools, banks, societies and organizations, and, in fact, all the institutions of the city, has always been recognized. As a history of the progress of the city and as an unequalled advertisement of its resources, the directory is growing in popular favor year by year.

The scope of this volume has in nowise been reduced and embraces all the features heretofore familiar to the directory user. The canvass has included all of "Greater Tampa" and even the more remote suburbs, such as West Tampa, Seminole Heights, Sulphur Springs, Moody Heights, Ballast Point, Palmetto Beach, Gary, etc., for, while all of these places are not within the corporate limits, their residents are so closely identified with the industrial and business life of Tampa as to render their inclusion most desirable in a Directory of the eity.

The following interesting data has been prepared by Mr. L. P. Dickie, sec- rctary of the Tampa Board of Trade:

Cause of Tampa's Growth.

A great factor in the upbuilding of Tampa is its civic pride. However they may ge divided on other questions, the people are a unit on everything that affects the prosperity of the city.

Tampa has long been noted for its delightful winter climate and the city has become a great resort for tourists and health seekers. It is hard for peo- ple from the higher latitude to realize that Tampa is, in summer, cooler by far than the average American city-at fact verified by the official weather records.

As a Residential City.

Directory Library.

:

A library of City Directories is maintained by the publishers at the Board of Trade for the free use of the public. These directories are kept up to date and are of great value for reference. The Tampa City Directory is placed in other directory libraries throughout the United States, where it serves the pub- lic as a valuable book of reference, and is a splendid advertisement for the city. There is no other publication which conveys an idea of the size, business and commercial importance of Tampa as does the City Directory.

Population.

The customary means of estimating the population of a city, is to multi- ply the number of names in the City Directory by 21/2 to allow for the names of women and children not included in the Alphabetical List of Names. In the present volume there are 31,234 names. By use of the multiple of 21/2 a popu- lation of 78,085 is indicated for Tampa and contiguous territory.

In conclusion we desire to express our acknowledgment of the support accorded the work and to extend the promise of every effort to fill the field in the future as in the past.

April 1, 1919.

Respectfully, R. L. POLK & CO., Publishers.
